Carers NSW NDIS Update
February 2016

Welcome to the Carers NSW NDIS Update, one of several resources developed by Carers NSW to help carers understand and engage with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

It takes time and effort to understand the NDIS. Many family members and friends (carers) of people with disability in NSW are finding it hard to keep up. The Carers NSW NDIS Update aims to make it easier for carers to stay up to date with NDIS news, resources and events.

Workshops for carers on the NDIS
Carers NSW has developed a half-day workshop for carers called Carers and the NDIS. The workshop aims to provide carers with a general introduction to the NDIS, help carers support the person they care for to access the NDIS, and prepare carers to communicate their own needs in relation to the NDIS.

"I've been to five of these workshops and this was easily the most informative." - Workshop participant

We are currently taking registrations for the following workshops:
  • Kariong, 16 March 2016
  • Bankstown, 23 March 2016
  • Wyong 7 April
Click here for more information. To register, contact our Education and Training team at education@carersnsw.org.au or 02 9280 4755.

NDIS News

What will the NDIS mean for carers who want to work?
National Disability Services and Every Australian Counts have released a report that predicts over 10,000 carers in NSW will be able to get paid work as a result of the NDIS. Carers NSW CEO, Elena Katrakis, was quoted in a Sydney Morning Herald article on the report, where she highlighted the importance of employment support and flexible jobs. Click here to read the news article and here to read the full report.

How does the NDIS fit with other service systems?
The Council of Australian governments has agreed on six principles that they will use to work out what the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for and what other service systems are responsible for. Click here for more information.

Children of New Zealand born parents may miss out
An ABC News article has reported that children born in Australia to New Zealand parents may not be able to access the NDIS, as they cannot become citizens until they turn 10. Click here to read the article.

Government considered private investment in NDIS
An ABC News article has reported that the Australian Government looked at shifting some of the costs of the NDIS to the private sector. However, Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter, has said this is not currently being considered, and that even though there will be a $5.2 billion funding gap in 2019-2020, the Government is committed to securing ongoing funding to cover the complete NDIS.
