NSW Carers Strategy

The NSW government has launched the NSW Carers Strategy 2014-2019, a five year plan plan to improve the position of carers in NSW. The commitments in the Strategy are based on practical actions and approaches that will make a difference in the lives of carers in the five focus areas of Employment and education; Carer health and wellbeing; Information and community awareness; Carer engagement and Improving the evidence base. National Carer Awards 2014

The inaugural National Carer Awards have been established to recognise the significant contribution of carers in the community. Nominations close 21 September 2014. Click here for more information.

New UK research on male carers

The Carers Trust (UK) has published new research dispelling the myth that caring is solely a female issue. The report 'Husband, Dad, Son, Carer?'  looks at the experiences and needs of male carers and aims to increase awareness. Click here for more information.

New cookbook aims to help people with dementia

Don't give me eggs that bounce: 118 cracking recipes for people with Alzheimer's is a new cookbook that aims to cater to the wide range of dietary needs of older people, people with dementia and those with eating difficulties. A special chapter dedicated to carers offers time saving techniques and practical knowledge. Click here for more information.

Disability

New disability legislation

The NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 recently passed through Parliament. The Act replaces the NSW Disability Services Act 1993 and brings disability legislation in line with person centred approaches and the transition to the NDIS. Click here for more information.

Calls for research participants

  • Researchers at Deakin University are inviting carers of people with intellectual disability to take part in an interview about their experience in using health care services for the person(s) they care for. For more information click here or contact Jeretine Tan at jeretine.tan@deakin.edu.au or on (03) 9251 7292.
  • Carers of children and young adults on the autism spectrum are invited to participate in a national survey by Autism Awareness Australia in preparation for the rollout of the NDIS. Click here to complete the survey.
  • The Centre for Disability Studies is running a study involving a 6-week support group for parents of children with intellectual disability (5-12 years old) who are experiencing stress. Click here for further information.

Seeding grants for inclusion

Macarthur Early Childhood Intervention Service (MECIS) is facilitating grants to assist children with a delay in two or more areas of development or a diagnosed disability to participate in their local community in mainstream leisure, sporting and recreational activities. Running or setting up a carer support group?

The together program provides opportunities for carer support groups to link with each other and a Regional Assisting Organisation to receive assistance, including some potential small grants to assist in the running cost of the group. Click here for more information.

Carers and home modifications

Caring for the Carer: Home design and modification for carers of young people with disability reviews the literature relating to housing, home modifications and carers of people with disability. It explores the benefits that home modifications can offer carers and the carer-centred considerations home modification professionals need to take into account. Click here to read the paper.

Health

Survey to increase health consumer engagement

Health Consumers NSW (HCNSW) are conducting a survey of consumers, health sector carer representatives and health professionals aimed at increasing consumer and carer engagement. The results will be used to develop new resources. Click here for more information.

Mental health

Living with schizophrenia

The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) has produced the booklet Living with Schizophrenia, also the theme for the World Mental Health Day 2014 campaign. The booklet acknowledges the importance of carers in supporting those living with schizophrenia and propose various intervention strategies. Click here to read the booklet.

NDIS

NDIS resources on Carers NSW website

The Carers NSW website now has a page with a range of links to useful information and resources about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) published by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and NSW Government. The list is intended to link carers with information that will help them to prepare for and engage with the NDIS. Click here to view the page.

NDIS progress report

The Joint Standing Committee of the NDIS has released a progress report on the scheme based on evidence from participants, carers and service providers in the four initial trial sites, including NSW. Click here to read the report.

Older people

COTA launches campaign to protect pension

COTA Australia has launched its Hands Off the Pension campaign in response to proposed changes in the Federal Budget affecting older Australians. Click here to read the media release.

Help after hospital stay

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released a report indicating that the Transition Care Program has helped many older people return successfully to community living. Click here for the report.

Technology

New website launch

The new NRMA Living Well Navigator website contains information about employment for older workers, transport and home care services, and includes a number of articles about caring and carers. Click here to view the website.

New mobile apps

  • A new mobile app launched by the Association for Children with a Disability (ACD) NSW helps people of all ages with disability and their families access information about venues and facilities in the City of Sydney. Click here for more information.
  • Annacares is an app that acts as a personal assistant for clients of community care service providers. Click here for more information.
