Carers NSW NDIS Update
November 2015

Welcome to the Carers NSW NDIS Update, one of several resources being developed by Carers NSW to help carers understand and engage with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

It takes time and effort to understand the NDIS. Many family members and friends (carers) of people with disability in NSW are finding it hard to keep up. This update aims to make it easier for carers to stay up to date with NDIS news, resources and events.

Workshops for carers on the NDIS

Carers NSW has developed a half-day workshop for carers called Carers and the NDIS which is ready to run with groups of up to 10 carers. The next workshop will be happening in Springwood on 10 December 2015, from 10am to 2pm.

"I've been to five of these workshops and this was easily the most informative."

To register contact our Education and Training team at or 02 9280 4755. We also welcome any suggestions you might have for reaching carers with this workshop.

Disability ministers show their support for carers
At the most recent meeting of disability ministers from across Australia, members affirmed the importance of recognising and including carers in the NDIS and asked the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to review its policies and resources to reflect this. They also agreed to:

  • consider housing issues and the cost of specialist disability accommodation
  • report on the recent consultation about NDIS quality and safeguards
  • support strategies on services in rural and remote areas and on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement

NDIS priority of welfare budget
The Australian Treasurer, Scott Morrison, has said that the NDIS should be the most important thing in the welfare budget, but that other cuts may be needed to afford it. Shadow Minister for Disability Reform, Jenny Macklin, has accused the Government of misleading the public by suggesting that the NDIS is unaffordable. Click here for more information.

Strong demand in Nepean Blue Mountains
The new Nepean Blue Mountain NDIS site has experienced higher than expected demand, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Click here for more information.

Key progress reports released
Three key reports on the progress of the NDIS were recently released:
