Carers NSW NDIS Update
December 2015

Welcome to the Carers NSW NDIS Update, one of several resources being developed by Carers NSW to help carers understand and engage with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

It takes time and effort to understand the NDIS. Many family members and friends (carers) of people with disability in NSW are finding it hard to keep up. This update aims to make it easier for carers to stay up to date with NDIS news, resources and events.

Workshops for carers on the NDIS

Carers NSW has developed a half-day workshop for carers called Carers and the NDIS. The workshop aims to provide carers with a general introduction to the NDIS, help carers support the person they care for to access the NDIS, and prepare carers to communicate their own needs in relation to the NDIS.

"I've been to five of these workshops and this was easily the most informative." - Workshop participant

We are currently taking registrations for the following workshops:
  • Gosford, 12 February 2016
  • Campbelltown, 25 February, 3 & 10 March 2016
  • Bankstown, 17 March 2016
  • Sutherland, 12 April 2016
Click here for more information. To register, contact our Education and Training team at or 02 9280 4755.

Carers' experiences in NDIS trial sites
In 2015 Carers Australia ran an online survey with 92 carers of NDIS participants in trial sites. The survey found that:

  • Many carers who responded were confused about the NDIS
  • Many were not aware that carer supports could be included in the plan, or of their entitlement to provide a carer statement or have a separate conversation with the planner
  • Most helped the person they care for apply for the NDIS, prepare for the planning meeting and coordinate supports
  • Just over half felt NDIS support did not reduce the hours of care they provide
  • Most did not think the NDIS made it easier for them to pursue their own goals, including employment

Click here for more information about the survey.

NDIS fully financed
The Centre for Disability Research and Policy has released a report which explains that the NDIS will be covered by the 0.5% Medicare Levy increase, agreements with States and Territories and savings in other Commonwealth programs until 2019-20. The Government has assured that the remaining $4-5 million needed after this period will be found. Click here for more information.

Disability groups call for NDIS pay increases
ABC's PM recently reported on concerns from disability service providers that the NDIS is not paying enough for disability support workers to ensure a good quality workforce. Click here to read the transcript.

Better coordination needed between NDIS and health system
A recent article in The Conversation has highlighted the need for the NDIS and health systems to work together so that people with disability and associated medical needs do not get stuck in the middle. Click here to read the article.

Money allocated to complete disability housing
The Department of Social Services has made $10 million available to help organisations complete existing housing projects targeting people with disability living with ageing carers or in residential aged care outside the NDIS trial sites. Click here for more information.

Carer "gives NDIS the thumbs up"
An ABC news article has reported on one family's positive experience of the NDIS in the Hunter trial. Click here to read the article.
