FEBRUARY 2017

Welcome to the Carers NSW NDIS Update, one of several resources developed by Carers NSW to help carers understand and engage with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

It takes time and effort to understand the NDIS. Many family members and friends (carers) of people with disability in NSW are finding it hard to keep up. The Carers NSW NDIS Update aims to make it easier for carers to stay up to date with NDIS news, resources and events. Click here to read this in your web browser.

New NDIS resources for carers!

Carers NSW recently updated our NDIS web pages to ensure that carers in NSW have access to the most current and accessible information on the NDIS.

Visit www.carersnsw.org.au/NDIS to find out more about how the NDIS works and how it will impact you and the person you care for. You will also find:
  • Information about how the NDIS works for young children and for people living with a mental illness
  • Information about what to do if you have a challenging experience with the NDIS
  • Personal stories about carers' experiences of the NDIS
  • Links to NDIS resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Carers
  • Links to information about the NDIS translated into languages other than English.
Revised versions of our NDIS fact sheets for carers in NSW and dates for upcoming NDIS workshops in 2017 will be added to these pages soon.

Comments and suggestions on our NDIS resources are welcome. Please contact our Policy Team at policy@carersnsw.org.au or phone 1800 242 636.

Share your experiences of the NDIS

Carers NSW will be running two focus groups in March 2017 for carers in South-West Sydney to share their experiences of the NDIS. The focus groups will be held on during the day on 28 and in the evening of 31 March in Campbelltown, in partnership with Macarthur Disability Services. For more information, please contact Tom Hinton at tomh@carersnsw.org.au or on 02 9280 4744.

Current issues for carers

Carers NSW has recently heard that carers are having problems with the following:
  • Being able to get through on the NDIS 1800 number
  • Understanding the process involved with having a nominee appointed
  • Not having support coordination included in an NDIS plan even if they asked for it
If you have experienced any of these issues, we invite you to share your experiences with our Policy Team. You are also welcome to raise any other challenges you have experienced in accessing the NDIS as a carer. Contact us at policy@carersnsw.org.au or on 1800 242 636.

Review of NDIS costs
