We are pleased to share a document with our SMART trained exercise volunteers and staff - it is an Exercise Resource Manual which compiles all of our most recent info on everything from balls, modifications and seated options to boundaries and having difficult conversations. Also included are many photo images and links to videos of the movements. It will get updated regularly, and as we do we will share the link with you all. You can access it at the link above or HERE. Celebrating our successes!

Elisabeth had not ridden a bicycle in over 40 years, but recently acquired this “fire engine red” bike. She gave us permissions to share this photo and her story: 

Thanks to the confidence and strength she has gained from participating in the exercise program she is riding her bike a few kilometres down the side road that she lives on. She is beyond excited to be able to accompany her daughter and her new grandson on excursions down the road all the while enjoying the outdoors and a new found freedom. She is even mastering some inclines with her bike! Because of the ’step up and over” exercise that we do in class Elisabeth is able to step up and over to get on her bike.

Stand Up to Falls sessions

Stand Up to Falls for Osteoarthritis (OA)

Stand Up to Falls for Osteoarthritis is a referral-based program specifically designed with the functional approach to an exercise circuit for those with hip/knee Osteoarthritis. Participants will use the theraband for lower body strengthening, core stability, and stair climbing/chair stands. The program includes participants practicing transitions from the floor to a chair and is progressive and individualized based on participant needs. 
We are offering it to clients 2x/week for 6 weeks, free of charge. We have secured a program location in Kitchener and continue to register clients as we receive referrals.

We will accept all levels of participants provided they have hip/knee OA. Faxing us the form HERE or continuing to use Caredove for referrals from registered health care professionals works great.

Client Safety Tip for October
Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday, October 6 and ends on Saturday, October 12.  This year’s theme, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” encourages everyone to plan and practice a home escape plan. In a home fire, you may have as little as one or two minutes to escape safely. A plan ensures everyone in your home knows exactly what to do if the smoke alarms sound in an emergency. It is important to install smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas and to test your smoke alarms every month. If you live in an apartment building, ask the building owner about their evacuation plan and have a plan for your specific apartment. Always call 911 if you have an emergency.

In the fall season many people find themselves struggling to stay motivated to exercise as the weather gets colder. Luckily, it is a great time for fresh starts and new goals to get healthy regardless of whether a person is a seasoned exerciser or just beginning their fitness journey.  “You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them.”  (Michael Jordan)
As a member of the Safe Community Advisory Committee VON participates in a Safe Communities Day in which we educate up to 300 grade six students about the importance of exercising to reduce falls and injuries. We want to help eliminate any ageist beliefs that these students might have and demonstrate to them that frailty is not inevitable, it is reversible and that one can age successfully being active and able until their very last day so that they can not only use this advice themselves but, also pass this message on to their parents and grandparents.

The members of the Falls Prevention Advisory Committee thought there would be no better way to demonstrate the concept that age is just a number than to highlighting the amazing accomplishments of older adults including three VON instructors that are 84, 86, and 96 that became instructors this year and have taught and participated in over 150 classes this year. (pictured below)

November is Falls Prevention Month and we at VON will calculating the results of our Falls Prevention Challenge to determine how many of our challenge participants completed 50 hours of standing exercise. Currently we have over 190 people who have completed 50 classes, over 10 that have completed 100 classes and 3 people that have completed over 150 classes. If 50 hour of standing exercise can prevent one fall and falling once doubles ones chance of falling again just imagine how many falls the SMART classes have prevented.
