From Ashlynne Boven

Hi - Ashlynne here! I am excited to be the new 'face' behind the SMARTlink newsletter! Thanks for making me feel welcome, and I hope we can continue our virtual journey together!

A reminder that our office is closed and there is no programming on
Thanksgiving Day - Monday October 12, 2020

We are planning for our next round of VIRTUAL STAND UP TO FALLS!
Start date is scheduled for Tuesday October 13th - running Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm. We are excited to continue to use the Zoom platform to interact with our clients.
Feel free to share the below poster with anyone who may be interested in joining, no registration required. You can join by clicking this link:

Celebrating our success! Feedback from our virtual participants:

"I wanted to tell you how impressed I am with the Zoom fitness classes! I have had 4 different leaders and they have all been excellent! Thank you so much for your hard work!"
A client wanted us to know how thankful she is for the virtual exercise classes. She was set to get the 1:1 program but that program has been postponed due to COVID-19. However she thinks the virtual classes are really helping her right leg (weaker leg) and she can tell a difference with all the different movements she has been doing in the classes. She does most of the class seated but is hoping to get to the point where she can do more and more standing.

Client Safety Tip of the Month:
National Fire Prevention Week is coming up! Running from Sunday, October 4 to
Saturday, October 10, Fire Prevention Week focuses on three actions:

  1. Look for potential fire hazards around your home, and always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Encourage people who smoke to go outside and extinguish cigarettes in large, deep ashtrays that cannot be knocked over. Check electrical cords for damage as exposed wires can result in a potential shock or fire hazard.
  2. Listen for the smoke alarms in an emergency. Early detection of fire provided by smoke alarms gives you the extra seconds you need to get out safely. You should also test your smoke alarms every month to make sure that they are working properly and change the batteries as often as recommended by the manufacturer. Replace any smoke alarms that is more than ten years old.
  3. Learn two ways out of every room. Practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your home before a fire starts so you can get out quickly.

VON Client Success stories:
  • Last year Yvonne told her instructor Laurel Berry that she joined my class one day, and thought "wow, this is something I can do".  She found it fun and inspiring, which kept her coming regularly, and helped her lose 40lbs!  Yvonne continues to attend Laurel Berry’s Zoom classes on a regular basis.
  • Zoom exercises Program - VON
Many thanks for your excellent leadership to run the Fit-exercises. Your program is very good for and tailored to seniors, it is keeping active.  The exercises are well balanced, varied.  There is a range of intensity and all the movements are geared to engage the brain and the body for co-ordination.  This is helping me to walk and chew gum at the same time : )
Laurel - your smiles and cheery disposition are a Bonus!
