Celebrating our successes!

  • Participating in the exercise programs has kept me off the operating table! I was to have both knees replaced - went to GLA:D and now the WALC classes and my knees feel good enough that I don't need surgery. I even travelled to Italy and did a few tours, was able to go up & down all the stairs. I highly recommend the exercise programs to my friends too. I hope the program continues. - CSC client
  • I attend the Melville Church class twice a week and I really enjoy exercising with Kerri she is an exceptional leader. She leads the class at a good pace for seniors and has a friendly sunny personality. I feel better now than I did before participating in the class, the stretching exercises really help me. In fact I have discontinued maintenance sessions with a chiropractor. - VON clients
  • Because the VON has provided fitness classes at no cost to participants it has meant that I can exercise twice a week. Hopefully by keeping active it will keep me healthy and prolong my life. The instructors are great and keep the fitness class fun and entertaining. - VON clients

CSC Waterloo Region News

From Jenn McDonald
CSC is excited to announce we have hired Registered Kinesiologist Leigh B to join our Exercise Team! Leigh will begin with CSC on June 12th, don't be surprised to see Leigh popping into your exercise classes as she gets to know our SMART routine and all of our awesome instructors. We would be lost without our summertime exercise students: Alison, Natasha and Kaitlyn who have been exercise trained and will providing coverage for classes.

Reminder: NO classes offered on Monday July 1st (Canada Day)

Rosemary's story

After a decade on her own after the loss of her husband, and with two sons living at a distance, Rosemary commits to leading an active, healthy lifestyle to help her stay independent in her senior years.

"My home is special to me. When I came here I was accepted by people, and it grew on me as some place I belonged. I hope I can stay here as long as my health and my movement can allow me," said Rosemary.

June is Seniors' Month, a time to celebrate our senior neighbours like Rosemary and thousands more across the region who are making invaluable contributions in our community.

Rosemary is a long time participant in our free gentle exercise classes and she rarely misses a class, always has a smile on her face, and inspires others with her positive attitude.

"Exercise improves not only your movement, but also your mind and your attitude," she said.

Because Rosemary attends classes, she is able to learn about the other services we provide through her instructor and Community Connector, Sam. Now she receives rides to her medical appointments from CSC's volunteer and staff drivers.

"The drivers that come to pick me up, you would think that they were my brother. They are accommodating, they are professional, and they just do it right," said Rosemary.

Stand Up to Falls for Osteoarthritis (OA)

CSC is excited to continue to with our Stand Up to Falls for Osteoarthritis program. It is a referral-based program specifically designed with the functional approach to an exercise circuit for those with hip/knee Osteoarthritis. Participants will use the theraband for lower body strengthening, core stability, and stair climbing/chair stands. We modified a floor component so participants are practicing transitions from the floor to a chair as it is a life skill. The program will still be progressive and individualized based on participant needs. It has allowed us more flexibility in accepting a wider range of referrals, and over the past few months have seen great outcomes.

We are offering it to clients 2x/week for 6 weeks, free of charge. We have secured a program location in Kitchener and are currently registering clients for sessions upcoming.

We will accept all levels of participants provided they have hip/knee OA. Faxing us the form HERE or continuing to use Caredove for referrals from registered health care professionals works great.
"Our 102 year old participant was finally able to do her first sit to stands this week by mimicking my actions & holding onto the arm rests. The other participants in the class all cheered for her!" - GEF
Our next CSC GEF Meetings are:

Friday June 28th, 2019
315 - 430 PM
at Community Support Connections
61 Woolwich Street North, Breslau

Client Safety Tip for June – Fraud

Fraud is the number one crime against older Canadians. Though people of all ages can be victims of fraud, older people get targeted more than others. To prevent fraud, never give out your credit card, bank account, or personal information to someone over the phone, at the door, or over the Internet unless you know the person or organization you are dealing with, or you made the contact. Always be suspicious if someone you don't know asks you to send them money or a cheque, and give yourself time to think it over before hiring someone to have work done on your home, ask for proof of identity and references and check them.

VON News:

Having great days is not just because of luck it is because of your decisions which you make and practice them. I hope all your days in June are great days!

It is with mixed emotions that we say good-bye to the SMART Administrative Assistant her last day with us will be June 21st. We are extremely sad to see her go but, are happy for her as we know that she is quite excited about her next adventure. Dee Dee started working for VON 18 years ago. She started out working in the Adult Day Program, then moved into the role of the Meals on Wheels Coordinator she left VON for a couple of years before returning and joining the SMART program. Throughout Dee Dee’s time at VON she was always cordial and willing to help coworkers, students, volunteers and clients. Dee Dee has a kindred spirit and she displays a great deal of compassion, empathy with each client she works with always striving to help them achieve optimal wellness. Her hard work and dedication have been an important part of the VON team. We are definitely going to miss Dee Dee, in the office the office with no windows her positivity and infectious smile always seem to make the room a little brighter. As she turns the page in her life, we join together in wishing her every success in all of her future endeavors.
