CSC Waterloo Region News

65-year-old Lorna is on the move more than ever thanks to CSC's exercise classes. Click above to watch her class in action!
Lorna on the move
65-year-old Lorna is a participant in CSC's free SMART™ (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together) gentle exercise classes. After three years of regular attendance, the classes are improving her quality of living.

"I have a different attitude! We get together and we laugh and do our exercises to keep us limber. It enhances my ability to be self sustaining for longer."

Just three months ago, Lorna had hip replacement surgery and credits her swift recovery to the classes. "I feel I have really recuperated well. My doctors and physiotherapist all agree that I exceed expectations," she said.
"Exercising to the music and when you're laughing and having a good time you don't even realize you're exercising. I would really recommend it to anyone. It's a sense of community, the social experience, we laugh and I really do enjoy that."
Lorna, CSC Exercise Participant
Lorna also took CSC's Stand Up to Falls programming as the six week series rotates through their 90 exercise locations, in addition to an ongoing site.

Led by one of CSC's registered kinesiologists, Lorna learned tips she could apply to help her get back on her feet.

"The Stand Up to Falls program made me ever so much aware of my surroundings and what not to do. Not to carry too much, simple things that just escape your mind sometimes."

She recommends the classes to anyone who is looking for a sense of community, meet new friends and stay independent. Why not try them during Fall Prevention Month! Scroll down to find out how to find the class nearest you.

Client Safety tip:
November is Fall Prevention Month, a campaign which highlights that we all have a role to play in preventing falls. Falls are not a normal part of aging, and the good news is that most falls can be prevented. Here are five prevention tips to put into practice:

1. Prevent falls through regular physical activity.
2. Half of falls causing hospital stays happen at home. Ensure stairs are well-lit and clear of clutter, and all area rugs are secured to the floor, or non-slip rugs are used.
3. Have regular eye exams.
4. Have a doctor or pharmacist review your medications regularly.
5. Wear footwear that is properly fitted, with a low or no heel, strong ankle support and a non-slip sole.

CSC offers free exercise and falls prevention classes at convenient locations throughout the region. Participants work with a registered kinesiologist three days a week over a six-week period to learn helpful tips on living well with Osteoporosis, building balance, nutrition and more. Registration is required. Call CSC’s office at 519-772-8787 for more information.

VON Guelph Wellington News:

By Kelly Gee

VON News:

Unintentional falls are the leading cause of injury for Ontarian’s aged 65 and older one in three seniors will fall each year and falling once doubles one’s chance of falling again. This year we would like to change these stats in Wellington County with getting as many older adults out to our exercise classes and fall prevention education sessions!

The month of November is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, and what better way to build awareness for falls prevention education than through a SMART exercise challenge!?
This for Falls Prevention Month we are going to have a 50 class challenge.  It has been proven that 50 hours of standing exercise can prevent one fall so we are going to challenge participants to attend 50 exercise classes.  When participants attend 50 classes they will be awarded a prize.  We will track how many participants attend 50 classes from November 2018 – November 2019 to see how many falls we prevented in Wellington County.

Older Stronger Faster - Check out these amazing women all over 80 years of age!

The Falls Prevention Education will run from November to December 14th in the following locations:

Riverside Glen – Guelph
Wellington Park Terrace – Guelph
Mount Forest Curling Club – Mount Forest
Mount Forest Legion – Mount Forest

Next VON GEF Meetings:

Tuesday Dec 4th 12pm - Guelph GEF Meeting – VON satellite office, St. Joes Apts Board Roam, 401 Edinburgh Rd. N, Guelph
Friday Dec 7th 1:30pm – VON Office 392 Main St North Mount Forest

Like CSC, VON is happy to be partnering with the YMCA to deliver this 8 week program. This program is offered every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30pm at the Guelph YMCA. Each eligible participant will receive at 3 month YMCA membership. For more information contact VON’s Registered Kinesiologist Erika Cellini
