This Edition:

We are pleased to share that Community Support Connections – Meals on Wheels and More is now a fully accredited organization through Accreditation Canada. This is an ongoing process we are proud to be part of as we strongly believe in being transparent and accountable to our clients. We are so excited to continue to demonstrate our commitment to delivering quality, client-centred services.

Support CSC's Annual Holiday Campaign

On November 29th, Giving Tuesday not only kicked off the giving season, but it also kicked off our 2016 Annual Holiday Campaign! Every year, we reach out to our community to help fulfill our mission of enabling people to live at home with independence and dignity. CSC relies on the support of our generous donors to provide 11 invaluable services for our more than 7,000 clients, including Meals on Wheels, free gentle exercise classes, transportation to medical appointments and so much more.

Please join us in reaching some of our most vulnerable neighbours to ensure they have the supports and services they need to live at home. With your support, you can help us reach our fundraising goal of $32,000 this holiday season!

To read our 2016 Holiday Campaign letter written by CSC's Board President, Frank Mensink, and to learn about the impact of your donation, please click here. Letters have been mailed to our supporters but if you would prefer to donate electronically, over the phone or by mail, please click here. On behalf of the clients, volunteers, staff and board of CSC, we thank you for your support.

Ernest and Rhéal's Story: A Decade of Friendship

When Ernest retired in 1989, the former Radar Engineer left the hustle and bustle of Toronto and bought a bungalow in a quiet Kitchener neighbourhood. He poured his energy into maintaining his new home alongside his late wife, making retirement some of the happiest years of his life.

“It gave me a job, kept me in shape, and gave me an interest,” Ernest said.

Born and raised in Britain, Ernest grew up during the Great Depression and recalls food rationing and mass unemployment in his childhood. At just 20 years old in 1944, the British Army called him to serve in World War II in India. Years later, a new job brought him to Canada.

Now at 92 years old, Ernest is thrilled to be living in his own home - a place of comfort and security.

“Here I’m independent,” said Ernest. “I can’t see myself happy in a retirement home. I’m a lot happier here."

Ernest stays busy by diving into new books and surfing the web, but he also looks forward to weekly visits with Rhéal, his friendly visitor through Community Support Connections - Meals on Wheels and More (CSC). Ernest and Rhéal have been meeting once a week for over a decade. Because Ernest lives alone and has no family, he appreciates the visits.

“I’m happy with him,” said Ernest. “He’s helped me quite a lot.”

At the beginning they enjoyed canoeing and playing pool together. Now, their favourite activity is having a bite to eat over a hot cup of coffee. Ernest's hearing loss means they sometimes need to use a whiteboard to communicate with each other, but it's not talking that matters most. It's all about enjoying each other's company.

“Giving back makes the world a better place, by being kind and doing our share,” Rhéal said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if Ernest lives to be 100.”

Thank you Rhéal for joining us in our mission of enabling people to live at home with independence and dignity. For more information about CSC's Friendly Visiting program, please call 519-772-8787 or visit our website at http://communitysupportconnections.org/volunteer/.

Feature Volunteer Opportunity: Friendly Visiting

Do you want to make a difference for someone who is feeling isolated and disconnected, especially this holiday season? If you are trustworthy, caring and supportive, or if you know someone else who might be a good fit for this role, then consider joining our team as a Friendly Visitor!

CSC's Friendly Visiting program provides friendship and companionship to housebound and socially isolated clients. Each friendship is unique and volunteers create a sense of belonging within our community. The program may also provide an overwhelmed caregiver with a much needed break, while also providing companionship and compassionate support to the client.

Volunteers meet with their friend weekly for approximately 1 to 3 hours at a mutually convenient time. Visits can be centered on a shared hobby or interest, or volunteers are also able to accompany their new friend on a social outing like going out for a cup of coffee or visiting a nearby park.

Join our team by calling 519-772-8787 and asking for a member of the Volunteer Team, or apply online at http://communitysupportconnections.org/volunteer/apply/.

Thank You to The Co-operators

The Co-operators Claims Office in Cambridge held a fundraiser this fall and raised more than $5,300 for CSC as part of a larger event supporting multiple charities! Because of their generous support, we are able to reach even more clients ensuring they have the supports and services they need to live at home with independence and dignity. If you would like to host a fundraiser for CSC through your own office or community group, please call our office at 519-772-8787 and ask for Rosalind at ext. 225 or email rosalindh@cscmow.org.

YES (Youth Enabling Seniors): Snow Buddies Needed

We are reaching out to the community, especially parents and youth, to give our clients a helping hand this winter by becoming a snow buddy! This is a great opportunity for youth looking to gain practical work experience while earning extra cash. It might also be a great opportunity for retirees looking for supplemental income with a desire to give back to the community.

CSC can accept applicants as young as 11 years old, as long as a parent or guardian accompanies them to the client’s home. Snow buddies are paid directly by the client at a rate of $15 an hour and can take as many clients as they want. Youth can apply to CSC’s YES (Youth Enabling Seniors) program by obtaining an application form from CSC’s Worker Coordinator. The application is easy and requires parental consent and two teacher references. Heather, CSC's Worker Coordinator, can be reached at 519-772-8787 ext. 243 or email heatherm@cscmow.org.

Applicants 14 years of age and older can fill out an Online Brokered Worker Application at http://communitysupportconnections.org/careers/. Applicants 16 years of age and older can also apply online but must complete a screening process, which includes a police check for working in the vulnerable sector. We hope you will join us this winter and help local seniors and adults with disabilities stay safe living in their own homes!
