June is Seniors' Month: Meet Lloyd

In honour of Seniors’ Month, CSC is pleased to share the remarkable story of Meals on Wheels client, Lloyd Schnarr, and offer you a glimpse into our local hockey history. Lloyd is 93 years old and lives in his own home with his wife, Rosemary, who is 90. Lloyd and his wife have been enjoying Meals on Wheels for over eight years, receiving the nutrition they need to live at home with independence and dignity.

“The meals are all good,” Lloyd says. “The volunteers are a treat!”

Lloyd has called Waterloo home his entire life and had a successful career as a business owner. Though Lloyd enjoyed his day job, it was his love of hockey that always won the spotlight.

Lloyd laced up his skates for the first time when he was five or six years old. Hockey was a huge part of his life from playing professionally in the AHL, to coaching the Waterloo Cubs before they became the Siskins. He was even nicknamed Lloyd “Slapshot” Schnarr for shattering a puck in two during a game when he was 70 years old.

One of the highlights of his career was being able to play alongside Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe in the 1940s. It seems Mr. Schnarr left quite the impression as more than 60 years later, Mr. Howe made a special trip to the Galt Arena to visit his old hockey mate in 2012.

Lloyd hung up his skates for the last time seven years ago and though it was a big change in his life, one thing that has stayed the same is the place he calls home. The couple’s son, Michael, can’t say enough about the Meals on Wheels program as his parents receive a hot, nutritious meal each weekday.

“Meals on Wheels takes a load off your mind, knowing if I’m not here, the food is going to be here,” he says. “We don’t have to worry about mom and dad not getting a meal. Everything is a bonus to have these people come by.”

Lloyd's life story is one to be celebrated as he continues to share his passion with others. CSC is delighted to be part of his story and to help couples like Lloyd and Rosemary live in the comfort of their own homes.

New Strategic Plan - Exciting New Positions and Changes at CSC

CSC is delighted to share our 2016-19 Strategic Plan, appropriately entitled ‘Our Passion and Purpose’ and highlight for you some of the activities we’re already undertaking to make this plan a reality. Earlier this year, we hired Linda Flemming as our Client and Caregiver Engagement Specialist. Her role will be to increase awareness of partners and potential clients regarding CSC services – as well as providing increased caregiver support options throughout the community.

We’re now announcing other new positions to help us achieve our Strategic Priorities. In the coming weeks, we’ll be hiring Engagement Specialists to increase community and volunteer involvement with CSC and several new ‘Connectors’ – who will offer exercise, social activities, interim direct service and service coordination throughout our community. Please check out our website at http://communitysupportconnections.org/careers/ and share this information widely with the exceptional, dynamic individuals in your network who are passionate about making a difference in our community.

Thank You 100 Women Who Care!

We were fortunate to be nominated by group member Shirley Levene for the 100 Women Who Care this past week. The opportunity to speak in front of the group, resulted in the majority of their members voting for us, which means we will be receiving a generous contribution from them in the next few weeks!

While the numbers are being totalled, with their generous support, CSC will be able to create a kitchen garden, where we can welcome volunteers, provide meaningful learning opportunities for youth in need of a place to go, and once again reduce the costs of our kitchen by growing a few of the more expensive items we go through like tomatoes and peppers. We will also install a living herb wall in our Breslau location, providing fresh ingredients for our clients year round, while improving air quality for volunteers, visitors and staff. Their support will help us buy tools and soil, build a shed and a composting system for our kitchen so we can stop paying to have someone take away our kitchen waste! We can buy fruit trees for our pies and pay for hardscaping to ensure the garden is accessible to anyone who wants to volunteer their time in it.

The Great Canadian Giving Challenge

During the month of June, every $1 donated to CSC through CanadaHelps.org is an automatic entry for our organization to win a $10,000 donation! A $10,000 donation would enable us to continue delivering responsive and pro-active client and caregiver centered care by helping us expand our transportation fleet with the purchase of a much needed new vehicle.

Last year we provided 38,310 rides to medical appointments and the grocery store. While thousands of one-on-one rides are provided by our dedicated volunteers in their own cars, our agency vehicles allow us to maximize our drivers' time, taking group trips to day programs or the grocery store.

Thank You Sponsors and Golfers

Thanks to everyone who came out in support of our 2016 Drive to Deliver/Golf Social Tournament. Your generosity helped us raise over $21,000 for our Meal Subsidy Program, enough to offset the cost of 5,400 subsidized meals for low income seniors and adults with disabilities in Waterloo Region. A special thank you to our major sponsors:
