CSC Waterloo Region News

By Jenn McDonald
Happy New Year from your Exercise Team! Hoping that everyone had a nice holiday season and found some time to relax and recharge.

The new year may be a time to remind our participants why it is that we exercise, to prevent falls and to help us to recover from a fall or episode of imbalance - here are some recent falls statistics for Waterloo Region:

- Older adults in particular are most at risk of falling, with one in three older adults over the age of 65, and one in two over the age of 80 falling at least once per year

- Falls are responsible for more emergency department visits and hospitalizations in Waterloo Region than any other form of injury

- Recent data from 2015 shows that in Waterloo Region, falls send almost 14 older adults aged 55 and older to the emergency department per day (5,020 that year) and hospitalize just over three per day (1,214 that year)

What do you do if you fall? What if you cannot get up? What if you are the witness to a fall?

"Our instructor happened to note how much my flexibility has improved since I started attending classes last year. Initially the flexibility of my knee area was almost non-existent. I had discussed this with my family doctor several years ago who indicated that my movement was still not bad enough for an operation on my knees.

I lack cartilage and upon bending you can hear the bone/on/bone noises. As I attend classes twice weekly, movement is easier and I look forward someday to actually being able to kneel down on the ground. Thank you very much for all that you do.

Client Safety tip:
Hand washing is the most inexpensive and effective prevention technique for disease transmission. Here are a few helpful steps you can take for proper handwashing. Add soap and rub your hands together, ensuring you have lathered all surfaces for at least 15 seconds. (Sing “Happy Birthday”!). Wash the front and back of your hands, as well as between your fingers and under your nails. Rinse your hands under warm running water, using a rubbing motion. Wipe and dry your hands gently with a paper towel or a clean towel. Use the towel to turn off the tap.
Routinely cleaning and disinfecting your environment, helps to stop the spread of germs. This includes disinfection of frequently touched tools and surfaces such as exercise equipment like balls, weights and chair surfaces. Exercise equipment should be disinfected following every exercise class – appropriately designated wipes should be kept on-site where possible and are available at CSC via one of our Exercise team members.

VON Guelph Wellington News:

VON News:

Happy New Year!

We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season spending time with family and friends. We are looking forward to another successful year of helping seniors stay upright, balanced and independent with our SMART Exercise Classes and our Falls Prevention Education Sessions.
We will continue with our Falls Prevention 50 class challenge. Studies have shown that 50 hours of standing exercise will prevent one fall so we are rewarding anyone that attends 50 classes by November 1st, 2019. This might seem like a daunting task but, if we break it down it is not that hard. If one attends 1 class a week it will take the full year; if one attends 2 classes per week it will take 6 months; if one attends 3 times a week it will take 4 months; If one attends 4 times a week it will take 3 months; if one attends 5 times a week it will only take 2 months.

Towards the end of every December, those of all ages reflect on the year they’re leaving behind and start focusing on the future. January really is a great time to set some New Year’s goals in an attempt to better yourself in one way or another. The hectic holiday season has come to a close, and you can now get settled back into your daily routine. Or, better yet, create a new routine to ensure you’re getting the most out of all life has to offer.

Regardless of what your New Year’s Resolution is you will have a better chance of achieving your desired outcome if you set clear and attainable goals.

Celebrating our successes!

VON Client stories:

  • A client who attends one of the SMART group classes informed her instructor that she had a broken wrist and refused to have surgery so she has always had poor strength and mobility in that wrist. When she first starting attending the classes she could not use weights. However recently she has noticed more mobility in her wrist and is now able to use weights.
  • A client who attends one of our SMART exercise classes informed her instructor that she broke her arm she has been attending physio and the physiotherapist could not believe how strong she was and she proudly told him that she gets her strength from attending SMART exercise classes.
  • The Legion Custodian has viewed the exercise class for years but, always refused to participate. Last month the instructor was finally able to convince him to try out the class and he enjoyed it and he plans to attend more classes in the future.
