Beat the winter blues with tips from CSC's very own kinesiologists!
1. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, will help you refresh and re-energize. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring your inner calm. Examples might include listening to soothing music, watching your favourite television show, talking a hot bath, knitting, or reading a book.
2. Take time to exercise. Exercise will not only keep us physically fit, but it also has tremendous benefits in improving mental health. Exercise helps us stay focused, more energized, and improves our sleeping habits. When we exercise at a high enough intensity our bodies release hormones called endorphins. These endorphins trigger a positive feeling to the body, also known as a “runner’s high” which can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life. This feeling can also help us feel relieved of any stress, anxiety or depression associated with the gloomy winter months.
3. Take a Tech Time-out. Personal relationships and social connections can be nurtured with more one-on-one contact and less emailing, texting, and Facebooking. Commit to a time-out by turning off your phone. Social connections like these not only give us pleasure, they also influence our long-term health in ways every bit as powerful as adequate sleep, a good diet, and not smoking. Dozens of studies have shown that people who have satisfying relationships with family, friends, and their community are happier, have fewer health problems and live longer.
