This Edition: Thank You Volunteers!

National Volunteer Week, April 10-16

We are thrilled to be celebrating our more than 600 volunteers during National Volunteer Week (April 10-16 #NVW2016) and all year long!

CSC's volunteers are everyday heroes. They come out to deliver Meals on Wheels in the snow, rain or shine, and fill in routes at the last minute when we need them the most. They pick up a client at 3:30 in the morning to get them to an important medical appointment. They provide a warm smile and friendship for lonely and isolated clients. They help people stay healthy and active by leading gentle exercise classes. They sit on boards and committees providing professional and administrative support. Whatever their role, they go above and beyond to make a positive difference in people's lives.

Last year our volunteers contributed 82,908 hours of their time - equivalent to 45.5 full time positions - to help us serve 6,494 clients. CSC staff regularly hears from clients and family members about the amazing work our volunteers are doing:

"The volunteer driver was superb and we had some very interesting conversations...the bottom line was that you were there when I needed you the most. Thank you!" - transportation client

"Since (your volunteer) visited my mother for the first time, she filled her heart with happiness and joy.  She enjoys immensely the time they spent together."
- daughter of a friendly visiting client

Thank you for all that you do for our clients!

March for Meals Special Guests

Thank you to all of the local dignitaries who came out to deliver Meals on Wheels alongside our dedicated volunteers to celebrate March for Meals! Pictured above is Cambridge Councillor Pam Wolf and our dedicated volunteer Richard Trottier. We truly appreciate their support in helping spread the word about this vital program and how it is helping people live independently in their own homes. Click here to see all the pictures on CSC's Facebook page or click here to see them on Twitter.

Q and A's with Kitchen Volunteer Janet

Meet our dedicated Kitchen Volunteer, Janet. We asked her some questions about her experiences in the kitchen and here's what she said:

1. How did you first hear about CSC's volunteer opportunities? My neighbour and friend started volunteering with Meals on Wheels and loved it. She encouraged me to come along.

2. When did you start and what inspired you to become a volunteer in the Tender Loving Care Kitchen? I started in November 2014 helping my friend deliver meals on Fridays. While we waited for the meals, we often watch them being prepared through the window. It looked like fun. I'm a member of the Probus Club and got involved in the foodie club, and we wanted to volunteer. As a result, myself and two others now volunteer in the kitchen.

3. What is your favourite kitchen task? Seasoning vegetables, making meatballs and wrapping desserts.

4. Describe the most memorable moment you have had volunteering so far. The day when I discovered that Paula (Chef) and Tara (Sous Chef) can be such fun! They also have taught me so much.

5. What is the most rewarding part of volunteering? When I retired I knew I wanted to volunteer. Working in both the kitchen and delivering I have seen the spectrum of why this is so important. I also wanted to challenge myself because I have rheumatoid arthritis. I now have a new set of eyes and appreciate how difficult the life cycle can be for some. This is such a small way of being able to pay back and I appreciate this opportunity.

Thank you, Janet! If you or someone you know might be interested in volunteering, please call 519-772-8787 and ask for a member of the Volunteer Team. You can also click here to apply online.

Earth Day - April 22

On Friday April 22, CSC will be celebrating Earth Day, the largest environmental event in the world. More than six million Canadians—including nearly every school-aged child—participate in an Earth Day activity in their communities.

CSC is excited to announce that we are in the process of implementing changes recommended by Enviro Stewards, who completed a resource conservation assessment at our Breslau site in December. The first item on the list is replacing our light bulbs with more energy efficient ones - addressing the largest area of hydro consumption at CSC's Breslau site. CSC is working with Waterloo North Hydro to apply for saveONenergy grants for this and other projects. We look forward to making many more changes to make our operations as "green" as possible!
