June is Seniors' Month

This month marks the 31st annual Seniors' Month and we are so excited to be celebrating our local seniors. The theme for this year is Vibrant Seniors, Vibrant Communities, which recognizes the fact that seniors contribute to the life and vibrancy of our community, and continue to serve as leaders, mentors, and volunteers which greatly benefits us all.

Last year, CSC worked with over 600 caring volunteers who helped serve 6,494 seniors and adults with disabilities in our community. CSC provided 92,053 care coordination calls & visits; 76,695 Meals on Wheels; 68,932 units of gentle exercise; 52,392 hours of homemaking, home maintenance, yard work and snow removal; 29,785 rides to medical appointments, day programs and other necessary tasks of daily living; 12,032 friendly visits and reassurance calls; 9,2587 units of falls prevention; 3,714 community meals; 1,072 crisis intervention calls and visits; and 214 hours of caregiver support. CSC is so privileged to work alongside our incredible volunteers who selflessly serve our clients.

June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day which is a day to increase public awareness about abuse and neglect of older adults. In honour of this day, the Waterloo Region Committee on Elder Abuse is hosting a free Community Forum titled Financial Abuse Or Fraud - Which Is It? What Seniors Need to Know on Monday June 15th from 1-3pm at Great Hall, Luther Village on the Park (141 Father David Bauer Drive, Waterloo). RSVP by June 9th to Joy Hancock at 519-783-3236 x2009 or email jhancock@luthervillage.org. If you have any questions or concerns about elder abuse, please feel free to give our office a call at 519-772-8787 and ask for one of our Care Coordinators who can offer assistance. You can also find helpful information on the Ontario Seniors' Secretariat's website at http://www.seniors.gov.on.ca/en/safety/elderabuse.php.

Thank You Drive to Deliver Sponsors and Golfers!

Thanks to all of the sponsors, golfers and volunteers who came out to the 11th annual Drive to Deliver Golf Tournament on Tuesday May 12th! Because of your generous support, we raised over $23,000 which is enough to offset an average of 6,300 subsidized meals for lower income seniors and adults with disabilities in Waterloo Region. Your support means some of our most vulnerable neighbours will have access to a hot, nutritious meal regardless of their financial situation.

A special thanks to Cart Sponsor Matbridge Investments, Wine Sponsor Grand River Contracting Inc., Platinum Sponsors BMOTrillium Metal Stampings, GWS Water Store and Supply Co. Ltd., Prize Sponsors King Crab Oyster Bar & Grill, King Street Trio Uptown, Murray's Clothing and FootwearGolf Town and Rogers Kitchener Radio Group. The Hole-in-One Contest sponsored by Heffner Lexus/Heffner Toyota was as exciting as always with a few close shots. We hope someone gets to drive home in a new car next year!

CSC is Recruiting Volunteer Drivers

Some of our clients have to deal with the difficult news that they are no longer able to drive. This poses a significant challenge not only on their ability to get to important medical appointments, but completely alters their lifestyle as they no longer have the convenience and security of getting to the places they need to be.

One of the ways CSC eases this burden is by recruiting volunteer drivers who are willing to drive and escort seniors and adults with disabilities to and from medical appointments, hospital visits, and day programs. Our drivers are carefully screened which offers our clients a sense of comfort knowing they will arrive at their destination safely, and that they have a secure ride home.

Bob, one of our volunteer drivers, has been with CSC for over 10 years and has given at least 400 rides. He has become so familiar with the road that his clients feel safe with him. “I think it makes them more comfortable. It gives them a good feeling that the driver knows where they are going.” We want to thank Bob and all of our volunteer drivers for their ongoing dedication and support. Click here to see a video of the difference you can make in our client's lives.

CSC can work around your schedule and we also offer mileage reimbursement.  If you have a few extra hours in your day to give, please call our office at 519-772-8787 and ask for a member of our Volunteer Team. And as a thank you for your support of this important program, if you refer a friend, we would like to offer you a $5 gift card for Tim Hortons!

Help CSC Win $10,000

Help CSC win $10,000 by participating in The Great Canadian Giving Challenge! Starting June 1st until June 30th, every $1 donated to CSC by an individual through www.canadahelps.org or www.givingchallenge.ca is an automatic entry for CSC to win a $10,000 donation.

This money would greatly benefit our clients as a $10,000 donation is enough to offset an average of $2,700 subsidized meals for lower income seniors and adults with disabilities. To make a donation on CSC's Challenge Page, click here. A minimum $3 donation is required as part of the challenge rules. The grand prize draw is on Canada Day, July 1st! Thank you in advance for supporting our clients!
