This Edition: March is Meals on Wheels Month!

Meet Rick

Rick once caught a huge Steelhead Rainbow Trout and loves to tell the story. He is so proud of his catch that there is a picture on the wall of the home he shares with a group in Kitchener. A true fisherman, he appreciates the variety of fish options on the Meals on Wheels menu.

Originally from the Galt area of Cambridge, he spent 55 years there before moving to Kitchener six months ago. He said the transition to get his meals transferred from Cambridge to Kitchener was easy - all he had to do was call and tell the office about his move.

Rick was first introduced to Meals on Wheels by his sister in 2012. Rick’s health issues had made it difficult for him to get groceries and prepare his own meals. The Meals on Wheels program eased what would have been an additional burden in his life.

"It's hard to cook something every day. I look forward to Meals on Wheels!"

Rick thinks the food is wonderful, the portions are just right, and he loves that the program is reliable and convenient. With Meals on Wheels, he and his loved ones do not have to worry about him getting the nutrition he needs to live at home with independence and dignity.

"I know it's always going to be here," he said.

Meals on Wheels delivers hot, nutritious meals to a variety of groups, including seniors, people with disabilities, or those just released from the hospital who need a helping hand.

If you would like more information about the program for yourself or for a loved one, please call our office at 519-772-8787. Thank you Rick, for sharing your story!

March for Meals

CSC is one of hundreds of Meals on Wheels programs around the globe, offering supports that enable both seniors and adults with disabilities to live with independence and dignity. This month local Meals on Wheels programs across North America reach out to their communities to ensure this vital program is sustainable for years to come and that our most vulnerable neighbours are not forgotten.

CSC is thrilled to take part in March for Meals again this year by inviting our local mayors and dignitaries to deliver meals alongside our dedicated volunteers.

We will be hosting our annual 'Mayors for Meals' event on Wednesday, March 30, 2016. Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky, Regional Chair Ken Seiling, Kitchener Councillor Zyg Janecki, and representatives from the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network, will be showing their support by delivering Meals on Wheels departing from our Breslau office located at 61 Woolwich Street North. Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig will be delivering meals out of our Cambridge office located at 887 Langs Drive.

Be sure to follow CSC on Twitter and Facebook as we will be providing updates all month as local dignitaries come by to deliver meals to our clients!

Feature Volunteer Opportunity: Meals on Wheels Drivers and Runners

It doesn't have to be a huge time commitment...but can make a world of difference. Volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers deliver a hot, nutritious meal made with love in our very own kitchen to people who are unable to prepare their own meals. They also provide a safety check and a friendly visit which can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Many of our clients live alone and often the dedicated volunteer is the only person they see or speak with all day.

Meals are delivered Monday through Friday, over the lunch hour between 11am-1pm. Each route takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete and includes 7-12 home deliveries.  Mileage reimbursement is available and the time commitment is flexible. You may choose to deliver once a week or on a spare basis.

Did you know you don't need a vehicle to be a Meals on Wheels volunteer? Volunteer runners take the meals to the clients' doorstep and are matched with a driver.

Click here to apply online or call our office at 519-772-8787 and ask to speak to a member of the Volunteer team.
