Tacofest Raises $36,500 for CSC Clients

Tacofest, presented by MTE Consultants Inc., was another great success for the fourth year in a row! Thanks to our awesome community, you helped us raise $36,500 for CSC's Meal Subsidy program, enough to offset the cost of more than 9,000 meals for low income seniors and adults with disabilities. Congratulations to Gilt Restaurant, winner of The Golden Taco, Taco Farm, winner of The People’s Taco, Wildcraft, winner of The Vegetarian Victor for the second year in a row, and Four Fathers Brewing Co., whose Honey Badger French Saison won the Best Brew Award.

A big thank you to our Presenting Sponsor MTE Consultants Inc. who continues to be a huge supporter of Meals on Wheels through event sponsorship and team meal deliveries. New this year we welcomed Transportation Sponsor Heffner Toyota who ensured Tacofesters had a safe ride home. Green Sponsor Your Neighbourhood Credit Union provided the reusable glassware for beer sampling and Entertainment Sponsor Sandvine kept the latin vibes flowing all night long with Cazu. Thanks as well to Print Sponsor Westmount Signs, and Media Sponsors The Waterloo Region Record, CTV Kitchener, KOOL 105.3, and KFUN 99.5.

There would be no Tacofest without our amazing vendors! A special thank you to our 16 taco vendors and 16 craft beer and cider vendors who donated all of their food and drink to CSC. We encourage everyone to visit our vendors this summer! Click here for a preview of photos captured by the amazing Sylvia Pond Photography and click here to see photos from MDRN Photobooth Company. Meet Rose: Navy Veteran and Meals on Wheels Fan

After losing her grandfather in the First World War and having two older brothers in service - one in the Royal Canadian Navy and the other in the First Special Service Force - Rose was inspired to serve in the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service based out of Halifax during the Second World War in 1942. She worked in various positions until 1944, the year she and her late husband married and started to raise their four sons together.

One of the last jobs she held at the base was ordering food and supplies for the cooks. More than 70 years later, she’s on the other end receiving a hot, nutritious meal delivered by a caring volunteer.

“I love when they send roast beef,” says Rose. “I also like the fish. I just think it’s a factor of keeping me going.”

The vibrant, 93-year-old navy veteran has been a Meals on Wheels client for over six years and first heard about the program through Veterans Affairs Canada. Because Rose is unable to get her own groceries and cook for herself, Meals on Wheels helps her stay in her own home.

“It’s great to have these meals on hand. They are a big help especially in the winter. Even in the worst weather, they have never missed a meal.”

As part of D-Day commemorations on June 13th in Hamilton, Ontario, Rose received a special invitation to take a guided tour of the HMCS Haida, a Canadian warship and the world's last tribal class destroyer. (Click here for her article in the Waterloo Region Record.) Though Rose was thrilled to be honoured on this special day, her face lit up when she talked about her recent birthday festivities. She welcomed family into her cozy home as they gathered around her to celebrate.

“I’m very happy in my own home,” says Rose.

CSC is delighted to be helping our special neighbours like Rose live at home with independence and dignity. To learn about all of the supports and services and volunteer opportunities offered by CSC, please visit our website at www.communitysupportconnections.org or call 519-772-8787 and one of our friendly staff would be happy to help.

Increasing Fresh Local Content in Meals

CSC welcomed corporate group volunteers from Toyota Tsusho Canada Inc. on June 15th who started working on our kitchen garden. They collected and dropped off compost for the garden's foundation. A big thank you to Nedlaw Roofs and Nedlaw Living Walls for installing a skylight and herb wall at our Breslau location, pictured above, providing fresh ingredients for our clients year round.

We couldn't have moved forward on these initiatives without the very generous donation we received from 100 Women Who Care Waterloo Region. Because of you, CSC is able to increase fresh local content in our meals reaching a key strategic priority as outlined in our 2016-2019 Strategic Plan. Thank you for your support!

CSC Volunteer Opportunities: Shannon's Story

Shannon is a Meals on Wheels Volunteer in Cambridge and was introduced to the program at a young age. Her elementary school had a program called "Grand-Pals" where local elderly residents were paired with a student and they would do activities together. To pay it forward her class would walk to the local curling club and assist the Meals on Wheels head cook by making cookies and packing meals. Now at 31 years old, she wants to set an example for her daughter.

"I continue to want to inspire my daughter as well as encourage her that any act of kindness is meaningful."

Monday to Thursday, Shannon is a Food and Nutrition Manager at a long term care facility. On her day off on Fridays, she delivers Meals on Wheels.

"I enjoy every Friday seeing the happiness a good meal can bring someone," says Shannon. "Only an hour of my time, and although I am just a small piece of the puzzle, I know in some way I have helped someone."

Along with Meals on Wheels, CSC offers a wide variety of volunteer positions and we can work with you to accommodate your schedule. Apply online at http://communitysupportconnections.org/volunteer/apply/, email volunteer@cscmow.org or give us a call at 519-772-8787 and ask for a member of our Volunteer Team.

Friendly Visiting Strawberry Social

CSC's Friendly Visiting program hosts a gathering once a year for its volunteers and clients. More than 50 people came out to the 404 KW Wing on June 9th, where they were served delightful desserts made in our very own Tender Loving Care Kitchen. Thank you to all of our volunteer visitors who provide companionship to our clients!

The Friendly Visiting program matches volunteers with a client who meet on a mutually agreed upon time each week to play games, chat, or go out for coffee. If you have a couple of hours to spare in your week to meet with a new friend, email volunteer@cscmow.org, give us a call at 519-772-8787 and ask for a member of our Volunteer Team. You can also click here to apply online.

Congrats to our Volunteers!

We were thrilled to have eight CSC volunteers recognized at the 10th Annual Salute to Seniors awards held on June 9th. Congratulations to honourees Barbara Arthur, Doug Adams, John Wilson, Judy Renwick-Taylor, Laszlo Szabo, Mary Hobbs, Sandi Sparkes and Ruth Ann Moser. Each year The Mayor's Advisory Council for Kitchener Seniors hosts this fantastic event that recognizes outstanding contributions made by 50+ volunteers. Thank you to our incredible volunteers who generously give their time and hearts to our clients helping them live at home with independence and dignity!

Thumbs Up from Police Chief Bryan Larkin

Meals on Wheels had a special visitor on June 8th! Thank you to Police Chief Bryan Larkin for coming by and delivering meals alongside our dedicated volunteer, Steve from MTE Consultant Inc.'s Adopt-a-Route team. Your infectious smile and bright personality lit up our Volunteer Lounge and brought such joy to our clients.
