  CSC Waterloo Region News
From Ashlynne Boven

As the holiday season is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year, on the changes and uncertainty brought by the pandemic, including the shut down of all of our in person classes  - but we also want to acknowledge the positives. We were able to get Virtual SMART exercise and Falls Prevention classes up and running - and have seen great participation in these past months.
And think of those cold, snowy mornings where we didn’t have to venture out of our warm homes to the slippery roads to get to exercise class!

We want to thank our clients and participants for making us a part of their regular exercise routine. We have come to know so many of you via Zoom and love seeing your smiling faces each and every morning. We value their time in joining us, the feedback and comments about the classes, and referring their friends and family to join us as well.

We also want to thank and appreciate our facilitators leading exercise classes every day!  We (literally) could not do it without you!! Thanks for opening up your homes (on camera anyway!) to the exercise participants and making them work just as hard as at in-person classes.
Kudos to all of our facilitators - Andrea, Cathy, Francine, Kate, Kathleen, Kim, Kristi, Leslie, Margaret, Natasha, & Silva!
Also want to thank our behind-the-scenes exercise team: Cindy and Kinesiologists Leigh & Sarah!

Regular class schedule is as follows:
- Monday - Friday 9am - moderate/high intensity class
- Monday - Friday 1030am - moderate/low intensity class *more seated options available
- Monday/Wednesday/Friday 1pm - moderate/various intensities

Our Virtual SMART Gentle Exercise Classes will continue through the holidays - with NO classes held on the following days:
- Friday December 25th
- Monday December 28th
- Friday January 1st

If you know of someone that is interested in joining us, please send them the following link to get started with Leigh, one of our Kinesiologists!

VON Client Success stories:
Here are a couple testimonials of Wellington County and Guelph residents sharing their experiences of how exercising has helped them recover from injuries and improve their overall wellbeing.

I have been doing the zoom exercise class fairly regularly and I just want to say how much I appreciate your efforts and those of Laurel, who leads the 1:30 class.  I love doing this in the privacy of my own home, and not having to go out to do it.  I don’t share my screen so it doesn’t matter what I wear or how I look and people can’t see me holding on to the floppy bits of my anatomy when we are doing the “fast feet” moves.   And Laurel is really a great leader, making everything predictable and the transitions from one move to another easy to follow.

I wanted to mention one other lovely response when I did my monthly calls this time.
When I called her she said, “I was just thinking of you”.  I laughed and said, “Is that because you were doing your exercises?”.  She said, “No, I think of you every day.  It makes me happy to think of you and know that you will be calling me.  It is nice to hear a friendly voice.”  It touched my heart to know that she looked forward to hearing from me, and it is encouraging to know that I am making a difference, even with just a phone call.

VON Guelph Wellington News:
From Kelly Gee

VON News:

As 2020 draws to a close, we can reflect on everything that has happened this past year.  Though 2020 has brought unprecedented challenges to our community, it has been an incredible year of learning and growth for many.  We have learned about health, family, work and resilience, community and humanity and these lessons will carry forward as we enter the year 2021.

The year has taught us about adaptability not only for the VON organization, but for our clients as well.  We went from delivering classes / services in person to shifting our program and offering it remotely, overnight.
We began offering our exercise programs virtually through YouTube, Wightman Television, Facebook, and Zoom and we mailed out hundreds of SMART In-Home exercise booklets.  The best part is that we were able to take a generation that grew up with black and white TVs, some who had never used a computer/iPad/ Tablet, and we were able to teach them how to access our classes from their own homes.  Now, this did take a lot of work from the VON SMART Team, but they handled it with panache.   The SMART staff called 690 clients to explain to them the different ways that they could access the SMART program.   Hours were spent explaining how to use these various devices, how to download Zoom and how to click on links. The SMART team continues to call clients every month to check in on them asking how many exercise classes they have participated in and ensuring that they have everything they need to continue in the program.  From April 1st – Nov 30th the SMART Team has made 4537 telephone reassurance calls. We have had over 21,000 views of our YouTube SMART exercise classes, and we currently have over 300 clients participating in our live Zoom classes in which have had 6,498 visits.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us during these strange times!  Whether you've participated alongside one of our YouTube videos, Wightman TV airings, completed the exercises in our in-home booklet, participated in Zoom or just kept in touch! We are grateful to continue to be a part of your activities. Thank you! Keep up the great activity!!

The app is available to download for free, and Zoom users can choose to sign up to the free service, or for a number of paid plans. The free services allows users to create unlimited meetings with up to 100 participants, although the time limit for group meetings is 40 minutes
