CSC would like to welcome Emily S to our GEF Team! We are in the process of training 2 new summer students who will join our exercise team for a few months; we are happy to welcome back Jackie and Kate to our exercise team this year as well - they are both returning summer students!

Pictured above are two generations of exercise participants. Helen is one of our returning exercise participants (seated) here with her niece who also comes to exercise class. An amazing story as Helen will be celebrating her 102nd birthday this summer! Thanks for sharing your photos of our amazing exercise clients - and thank you to Helen and Diane for letting us share your enthusiasm.

Stand Up to Falls for Osteoarthritis (OA)

CSC is excited to continue to with our Stand Up to Falls for Osteoarthritis program. It is a referral-based program specifically designed with the functional approach to an exercise circuit for those with hip/knee Osteoarthritis. Participants will use the theraband for lower body strengthening, core stability, and stair climbing/chair stands. We modified a floor component so participants are practicing transitions from the floor to a chair as it is a life skill. The program will still be progressive and individualized based on participant needs. It has allowed us more flexibility in accepting a wider range of referrals, and over the past few months have seen great outcomes.

We are offerring it to clients 2x/week for 6 weeks, free of charge. We have secured a program location in Kitchener and are currently registering clients for sessions upcoming.

We will accept all levels of participants provided they have hip/knee OA. Faxing us the form HERE or continuing to use Caredove for referrals from registered health care professionals works great.

Client Safety Tip for May – Drive with Care 
Driver distraction is a leading cause of traffic crashes. It is essential to stay focused on the task of driving and let your passengers enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of spring in safety. Before driving, consider doing a circle check of your vehicle to identify defects and safety concerns, particularly tire conditions. Potholes are a concern at this time of year, so keep extra space from the car in front of you to give yourself more time to avoid the wheel-bending potholes. If you approach a flooded road as a result of heavy spring rains, the roadway under the water could be washed out so be sure to turn around and look for an alternate route. For those who don’t drive, be alert and aware of your surroundings while walking and make sure you have time to cross all lanes of traffic. Consider wearing light and reflective colours to be more visible to drivers.

VON News:

We have just had a great 2018- 2019 fiscal year. From April 2018 to March 2019 we had 2,120 different people attend our 6, 943 exercise classes totaling up to 76, 478 visits to a group exercise class. In addition we had 720 people attend our 455 Falls Prevention Education Sessions totaling 4,317 visits to these classes and 45 people received the SMART in-home exercise program totaling 386 individualized exercise sessions.
Our 50 class challenge continues until November 2019. If a person completes one class per week they will complete this challenge by November, if they exercise twice per week they will complete this challenge in 6 months, if they exercise 4 times per week they will complete it in 3 months and if they exercise 5 times or more they can complete this challenge in a couple of months. Right now we have over 30 people that have participated in 50 or more classes since November.
To our disappointment the LHIN did not grant us funding to continue delivering the GLA:D program. This 8 week education and exercise program for those with osteoarthritis in the hip and or knee is a fantastic program and we received great feedback from the participants of the program. Many of the participants stated that they had less pain, felt that they were more mobile and physically active after the completion of the program. If the GLA:D program is something that you or someone you know is interested in participating in GLA:D program there are other organizations/ companies that are offering the program and you can find these on the GLA:D website 

The next round of Falls Prevention Education Sessions will continue until May 24th at the following locations:

Guelph Lake Commons, Guelph
Norfolk Manor, Guelph

The Falls Prevention Education Series was excellent too.
