CSC Waterloo Region News

By Jenn McDonald
CSC would like to welcome new GEFs Dominic, Kathleen, Melissa and Andrea to the Exercise Team!

For Falls Prevention month there were so many class participants and instructors who took part in our video routine challenge - a big thank you to everyone who either sent in a video or arranged to have it done, they all look great and everyone appeared to have had lots of fun with it! Stay tuned, we'll be sharing our video compilation in the new year!

Many participants also completed the Falls Prevention word search and those who were able to solve the message were awarded a Stand Up to Falls giveaway.
"Exercising to the music and when you're laughing and having a good time you don't even realize you're exercising. I would really recommend it to anyone. It's a sense of community, the social experience, we laugh and I really do enjoy that."
Lorna, CSC Exercise Participant

Learn more here: What is GLA:D?

If you know someone who would be suitable for the GLA:D program, pass along the Clearance Form and information so they can share with their Dr/Physio/Chiropractor.
Client Safety tip:
Snow, ice and inclement weather pose safety risks for some of our clients, and it is essential to take extra precautions. If you are able to get out and about in the community, walk slowly, use small steps and wear appropriate footwear with low, wide heels and good treads. If you have a mobility device but do not use it regularly, it is especially important to use it now to prevent a trip or fall.

If you live in your own home, please ensure your doorstep, driveway, and sidewalk are clear of ice and snow to ensure the safety of volunteers and staff who may be picking you up or visiting your home. If you need help with snow removal services, please call our office at 519-772-8787, and we can help connect you with the services you need.

VON Guelph Wellington News:

By Kelly Gee

VON News:

At this joyous time of year VON would like to thank all of the staff, volunteers and community partners that have made 2018 a successful year for the SMART Program. We were able to meet our goals and expand our services enabling us to reduce falls amongst the senior population in Wellington County because of the generosity and commitment of people like you. We would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday season.

We know that most people have a love hate relationship with exercise.  One usually hates to start exercising but then loves the way that they feel and the benefits they reap from exercising. Nonetheless we do know it is hard to stay motivated especially in the cold weather and if you get out of routine (i.e. take time off over the holidays).  So we have a plan to help keep our participants motivated. We launched our 50 class challenge in November and will be handing out prizes and certificates to any SMART participant that attends 50 classes from November 2018 – November 2019. We are hoping that this challenge help with client’s commitment to their exercise classes.

Welcomes and Goodbyes:
We are happy to announce that we have a new SMART Administrative Assistant to our Team. Christine Downton comes to us already Certified as a SMART Gentle Exercise Facilitator and a background in Recreation Management for Alder Adults, and extensive customer service background.  Please join me in welcoming Christine to our SMART Team.

In addition we would like to welcome Emma Ciarafoni to our SMART Team.  Emma is a fourth year University of Guelph student whom has just completed her placement hours with us and will be joining us as casual GEF.  We love hiring successful placement students!

It is with mixed feelings that we say farewell to our Registered Kinesiologist  Erika Cellini, a feeling of sadness to see her go as we will miss her knowledge and expertise,  and yet happiness to see her extending her career boundaries. Erika’s needs to focus her attention on her research at UOG at this time in order for her to complete her PhD.  We know that she will tackle this venture with the same passion and dedication she displayed as part of our cohesive team, and soon will be addressing her as Dr. Cellini. Working alongside Erika has been an honor and a privilege, please join me in wishing Erika the very best of success in all her future endeavors.

Live Longer Stronger Better. Check out these inspiring older adults:

SMART Exercise Success Stories:

VON Client story:
My instructor Michele is OUTSTANDING as a VON representative and as a professional organizing and running one-to-one sessions. She is a caring and compassionate individual. I feel from my heart that she has given my life back to me. After three years I can finally get out of a chair using my legs. I now am choosing VON to be one of the charities we donate to, now and in the future as well. I want to donate $100.00 to the one-to-one program to ensure that it continues and that it can help more people like myself in the future. I also want to say a big thank-you to Kaitlyn the VON SSW who got me set up for this program. I am very grateful to Kaitlyn and Michele and to the VON for the one-to-one program.

CSC Client story:
"Thank you for the time  took to answer all of my questions. I did notice an immediate change in the approach used by the instructors in each of the classes I attend. I no longer feel like I am 'winging it' on my own. Both sitting and standing options are clearly demonstrated I'm delighted to see both get equal 'weight'. Thank you for promptly dealing with my concern, I've only been at it 2 months and already see an improvement! What a great program!"
