CSC Waterloo Region News

By Jenn McDonald
February is Heart Month.

We are delighted to share with you the love story of a couple of two long-time exercise class participants. Click on the photo above to watch their incredible story.

With their 65th wedding anniversary coming up in June, Ron and Lois are as in love today as they were decades ago when they first met at Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener.

“Ron came to college engaged but he said ‘that wasn’t the right one,' and somehow I won his heart,” said Lois.

“She’s been the right one ever since,” Ron replied.

Because they were putting themselves through school, the couple didn’t have money for extravagant dates in the early days of their romance. Fortunately, Ron had his own car he used to drive Lois everywhere. On their favourite outings, Ron would pick Lois up, drive to the country, and pull over to the side of the road to study. Eventually, Ron proposed to Lois on one of those dusty roads.

“At first, Lois thought I was kidding,” said Ron. “But we soon set the date to get married.”

"Some of my exercise ladies recently went on a trip to China. They were able to climb the steps of the Great Wall and though the steps are really irregular and some are quite high - they said the "climb up and overs" and other exercises where they have to lift their legs high really helped."

Harm 82, Molly, 85 and David, 95 have just proved that age is just a number. All three of these amazing older adults participated in a 16 hour practical exercise training over the period of two days and completed over 20 mentor exercise sessions. On Thursday Jan 31st 2019 all three of these older adults were evaluated and successfully obtained their SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together) Exercise Leader Certificate. They plan to facilitate classes a Guelph Lake Commons when there is not a VON SMART exercise leader available as they never want a class to be missed. They will teach the class together each person covering a different component of the exercise routine.
