e.motion21 Term 2 Newsletter

Welcome to Term 2!!!

A message from our CEO, Claire Vissenga

Welcome to the e.motion21 Term 2 newsletter! I can't believe how quickly the year is going and how much has been done already. In Term 1 we had several community performances in our regional and metro areas and our major Federation Square World Down Syndrome Day celebration. The community events were a great success with many of our talented participants performing. A big thank you and congratulations to all involved.

WDSD this year was my first major event with e.motion21! I couldn’t have been more proud of everyone involved. The dance performances were amazing and the collaboration with The Space dancers was so much fun, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. A huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and corporate sponsors who worked behind the scenes to make it all happen. As many of you who were there or saw us on the news and social media will know the weather was not kind to us. It rained for most of the day with the heaviest horizontal downfall right around our finale! In spite of this, our spirits were not dampened and in true e.motion21 style, the show did go on, albeit a little wet!

Term Two is back to business as usual. In the office we are busy planning future events and working hard towards making e.motion21 the very best organisation possible. Our Board is meeting regularly to oversee our work and set the direction we are heading in. The Committees of the Board are up and running. Some further information about the Family and Friends Committee is later in this newsletter. All of our classes are well in to rehearsals for the concert performances. There will be further information about the concert in coming months. In the meantime, please save the date.

Over the last few months I have visited all of our sites and attended nearly all our community performances so have had a chance to meet many of you. I look forward to seeing you again soon on my next round of visits. In the meantime, if there is anything I can help you with please contact me at any time. I work full time however am not always in the office so please feel free to call my mobile or drop me an email. My contact details are below.

I hope you all have a most enjoyable Term 2!

World Down Syndrome Day 2016

On March 18, over 110 volunteers, staff and celebrities participated in our World Down Syndrome Day celebration at Federation Square. Despite the rather hideous weather conditions, our dancers really did us proud…lifting the roof (almost literally at times!) with inspiring performances in groups and in collaboration with over 30 talented dancers from The Space Performing Arts Company. As well as our wonderful e.motion21 movers who volunteer tirelessly at this annual event we had great support from corporates with over 40 volunteers helping from the NAB and from the Dulux Group.

Our celebrity line up was huge this year. Our host was none other than Channel Nine’s Entertainmet Editor and host, Richard Wilkins; we had international model Madeline Stuart smash out the BeatFit routine and strutt the catwalk in our ‘Moving Bodies, Moving Boundaries’ singlet; and Melbourne’s favourite strapper, Stevie Payne, delighted the audience with his wit and charm.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the marvellous support from our generous sponsor, the Dulux Group, bringing not only their sponsorship and staff to volunteer but also the gigantic and gorgeous Dulux Dog!  Captain Carlton performed some amazing acrobatics and Liam Sumner, Carlton Football Club player, took time off from training to join in the fun and show support for WDSD.  A big shout out to DJ Benny B for also donating his skills to open the show with his energy and fun tunes!

We were thrilled we moved boundaries in Melbourne and beyond with our event making the 6pm Channel Nine news, not to mention the social media reach being bigger than ever.  Thank you to all the volunteers, parents, staff, participants and corporates for making our celebration of WDSD so epic this year.

Don't forget to check out our highlights reel here!

Family & Friends Committee Update

The newly formed Family and Friends Committee of the Board for e.motion21 has been formed and approved by the Board. They held their first meeting in first term.

A top priority for the Committee was to establish communication between the Committee members and the family members and friends of e.motion21 participants at each site. It was unanimously agreed that the contact details for the Committee members would be shared through newsletters and on the website. All Committee members will also be at their local sites regularly and available.

There are a couple of sites that do not have a local Committee member, namely Ballarat and Pascoe Vale. If you are from Ballarat or Pascoe Vale, firstly, if you are eligible and would like to nominate to be a local Committee member then please get in touch with the Committee Chair Kate Cobbold or our CEO, Claire, at the office. Secondly, if you have anything you would like to raise or bring to the attention of the Committee, please contact any of the other Committee members (contact details listed below).

The Committee also considered how families and friends of participants from the Performance Group might provide input. It was decided that at this stage, the best option will be for those families and friends to contact the local Committee member at their site of origin. If they are from Ballarat or Pascoe Vale then, again, please contact any of the other Committee members.

Below please find a list of Committee members, their contact details and availability.

The next meeting is scheduled for mid May.

New Program Ambassadors for e.motion21!

As many of you will be aware, Paul Matley has been dancing with e.motion21 for many years and for the last year has been our Program Ambassador. Paul’s time as Program Ambassador has come to an end and I would like to thank him for his dedication to e.motion21 and for being such a positive role model and spokesperson for all our participants. With all things that come to an end there is sadness but it is also a chance for new beginnings. We are delighted to announce that two new Program Ambassadors have been appointed to continue this important role. They are Shea Macdonough and Olivia Sayers. Shea and Olivia both dance at Kew. Congratulations to Shea and Olivia and we are sure you will be excellent in your new role!

National Volunteer Week!!

From May 9th to 15th we will be celebrating National Volunteer week and that means pausing to reflect and thank YOU for the amazing contribution you make to e.motion21 and the lives of our incredible participants.

This year the theme is GIVE HAPPY, LIVE HAPPY, acknowledging that not only are you making the lives of others happier, you too are also happier as a result of volunteering (studies show)!

It’s no accident one of our organisational values is FUN…representing the feeling of being in our program, volunteering with our organisation or even working on staff!

Putting the spotlight on our Amazing Volunteers!!

Katelyn Kirk, Bendigo

Q: How long have you been with e.motion21?
A: I have been volunteering with e.motion21 since the start of term 1 2016. I hope to be volunteering for many years into the future!

Q: What made you volunteer with e.motion21?
A: I am currently studying Early Childhood Education at La Trobe Bendigo and one of my subjects  last year required me to complete 20 hours community service. I looked into completing my hours at e.motion21 however I ended up at Kalianna Specialist School volunteering as a teachers aide instead. The idea of volunteering with e.motion21 stuck with me though as I have a passion for working with people with additional needs and I also was a dancer for many years as a child. Therefore I decided to begin volunteering this year and be a part of such a wonderful organisation. I love being able to build relationships with dancers and families and being part of the movement to  move bodies and move boundaries!

Q: What are your hobbies outside of volunteering with us?
A: I currently work full time at Kalianna School as Educational Support which I am very passionate about. I also am completing my Bachelor degree at the same time which can be a bit tricky! On the weekends you can find me playing netball for the Heathcote Football Netball Club or cooking big dinners for my friends and family. I also love to read and watch old TV shows (Seinfeld is my favourite!).

Professional Development Opportunity for e.motion21 Movers

To all our fabulous movers that love to learn (note: another organisational core value!) we would like to give you a heads up that early in term 3 we will be holding a professional development training session with a focus on the latest research in working with our participants and strategies on helping our participants achieve their fullest potential in class.

We will also hear tips from some of our long term movers – so you will not want to miss this!!

Training will be held in Kew Saturday afternoon on July 23. Please save the date! More details will be provided closer to this date.

Down Syndrome Victoria Family Fun Day!

On Sunday, 20th March we participated in DSV's Family Fun Day which was a great experience for all involved. It was also a great opportunity for e.motion21 to showcase what we're all about! Our dance and Beat Fit workshops were a huge success, you can see the proof in the photos below!!
