California Consumer Privacy Act

The California Republic bear
On January 1, 2020, an important law went into effect in California, but its impact isn’t localized just to The Golden State.

What is CCPA?
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) allows any California consumer to demand to see all the information a company has on them, as well as a list of all the third parties that data is shared with. In addition, the California law allows consumers to sue companies if the privacy guidelines are violated, with or without a data breach.

Who does it impact?
The Act applies to for-profit businesses that:
  • collect and control California residents’ personal information,
  • do business in the state of California, and
  • can say one of the following is true:
    • have annual gross revenues in excess of $25 million
    • receive or disclose the personal information of 50,000 or more California residents, households or devices on an annual basis
    • derive 50% or more of their annual revenues from selling California residents’ personal information
What should you do?
Even if your company won’t be immediately impacted, this law is one of many that will be enacted in the U.S. in the years to come.

As a business owner, carve out some time to review your privacy policies and make sure they're up to snuff. Because when it comes to privacy protection and compliance, it’s better to be proactive than reactive.

Project Highlight

Picocyl — Picocyl manufactures mini-gas cylinders for medical devices, and when it came to developing their new website, they had some specific goals in mind, including:
  1. showcase their unique product that no one else is manufacturing
  2. optimize the website so that visitors can find the info they need
  3. build the site using a content management system that makes it easy for Picocyl to manage
We had a lot of fun with this site, especially when it came to design. Not only did Picocyl provide plenty of beautiful imagery we could play with, but they also gave us the green light to implement some subtle-yet-eye-catching animation.
