June 2022

President's Message

By Suzanne Maranda

June is the month with our Year of the Garden activities, (see below for all the details) and I hope you will join us in sharing our joy of gardening with members of the public. We have two lovely gardens in the community and if you have yet to discover them, maybe this would be your opportunity. This is my personal invitation!
And how about visiting gardens this summer? We are looking for a small team of volunteers who would visit gardens this year in the hopes of convincing the owners to have their garden on a tour next summer. This planning committee would also be discussing alternative formats for this tour, so, if you have ideas, or you’ve loved going on tours elsewhere, please join us and let’s plan something for 2023 (email me: marandasmj@gmail.com).

You’re invited to join in the fun and “Live the Garden Life” during the Year of the Garden 2022, a celebration of everything garden and gardening related in Canada.

We will unveil our new Little Seed Library with GK members as well as  Kingston Area Seed System Initiative (KASSI) members on hand to answer questions, not just about pollinator plants, but about gardening in general.
  • On Saturday, June 18th, from 10:00-12:00 a.m., you are invited to Roden Park, where we have the Paterson Garden, a rock garden at the top of the hill. We will unveil our new Little Seed Library with GK members as well as Kingston Area Seed System Initiative (KASSI) members on hand to answer questions.

Society Updates

Just like Nature, things are always changing at Gardening Kingston

Nursery Discount Program

The Canadian Tire on Bath Road is no longer offering a discount to GK Members.
The updated listing is available on our website or download here

Flower Parades

Again at the June meeting, you will have the opportunity to “show off”: if you have a flower in your garden that you would like to show all of us, please cut it and place it in a little vase, and bring it to the meeting. There will be no judging as in years past, but we do have a participation prize for all members who bring at least one flower to the meeting.
To follow the suggestion from the folks who planned the Year of the Garden, we would like to see red flowers, but again, the parade can be multi-coloured… because we love all flowers!

Volunteer Opportunity:
KHS Board Member

Qualifications:
Enthusiasm and a desire to get things done!

Truth be known, attracting new board members feels like pulling teeth. Many of our long-term members have taken a turn in the past and some of our current Board members have already served multiple terms and feel it’s time to “retire”. Any board needs new blood to bring new ideas and keep the organization moving forward.  Now is the time to seriously consider adding your voice to the KHS Board and help shape the future of our society. We are looking for 2-3 new board members.
New members may feel hesitant to commit to the Board, feeling they don’t have the expertise required, but keep in mind that you have the support of other board members and you work together with separate committee members to get things done. It’s only through the commitment of our members that we can continue to deliver the program and events that you value most as well as develop new ways of doing things in these challenging times.
Election of officers is scheduled for our AGM November 10th, 2022.  Interested members may apply by sending an email to kingstonhortsoc@gmail.com before September 1st. You may volunteer yourself or nominate someone else (provided the nominee agrees). Someone from the nominating committee will contact you to answer any questions you may have about the commitment involved.
Satisfaction guaranteed…as in, you reap what you sow!
