A New Year - A New You!

Do you set New Year’s resolutions only to peter out just a few weeks in?  Then beat yourself up failing?  You are not alone.  Our intentions are there, but how do we stay on track?  There is a better way.   Here are a few tips to help you with your journey.
  1. Accept that perfection is not the goal.   There will be setbacks and down times, but when that happens, give yourself some grace.  You don’t have to be perfect to reach your goal.  Simply acknowledge that it’s okay to make mistakes, forgive yourself, and continue on your journey.  It takes courage to set goals and a conscious effort to pursue them.  Be kind to yourself just as you would to a friend on the same path.  You deserve it!
  2. Set reasonable goals and reasonable steps to achieving them.   Use courage to take each step.  Make small changes each day or week.  Build on progress.  As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”  It’s an unreasonable expectation that things will change immediately.  Ask yourself, “What step can I take today to become my better, healthier self?”  or “What is the best use of my time right now?”  Stick to your plan, and you’ll get there.
  3. Set healthy limits.  For example, maybe it’s setting a limit on how much unhealthy food you’ll eat.  Or a limit to how long you’ll sit on the sofa.  Sometimes trade-offs work – “For every hour I sit on the sofa and watch television, I will apply the same amount of time doing something toward my goal (i.e.  1 hour sofa sitting = 1 hour walk).”  It’s all about balance and consciously staying on track and on focus.
  4. Have faith in yourself.  If your negative thoughts are combating your belief that you can achieve them, you’ve already failed.  When negative thoughts stray into your concious, diffuse them immediately.  Stop, breathe, focus on the present moment.  Use “I am” affirmations:  I am healthy, I am abundance, I am capable, I am good enough, I am lovable, I am on track, I am grateful.  Use meditation to grind these affirmation in.  Visualize positive, powerful energy being applied toward obtaining your goal, and believe that you already have it.  Next thing you know, changes begin to occur.
Remember that when you surrender to negative thoughts, you’re relinquishing your personal power to something that doesn’t even exist.  They’re just thoughts.  They’re just words.  Keep your power and use it toward what you really want, toward your goals, to the new and healtheir you..
