Tips to Coping with the Holidays

Love, Joy & Peace.   Three words we hear continuously throughout December.  But how do you maintain love, joy and peace when you’re dealing with the traffic and crowds at the mall?  Or how about the idea of facing those difficult family members?  Or perhaps this is the first holiday without a loved one.
Here are some tips to help you out:
  1. Stay present in the moment.  Avoid letting your mind wonder and getting trapped in the future or in past events.  Staying present helps you stay more positive.
  2. You don’t have to be perfect (and neither do they).  We can often have unreasonable expectations of what we want the holiday to be.  Trying to control the your event, dinner, party, etc. is impossible.  Letting go of perfection may be difficult, but doing so really will make your life a lot easier. Just accept the imperfections of what is and allowing for mistakes may give you something to laugh about later.
  3. I know many who have lost loved one this year and dread the first holidays without them.  Grief is an  essential pain of love.  The more you loved, the more it can hurt.  Know that grieving is okay and give yourself a lot of compassion during this time.  If you feel strong emotions coming on, it’s okay to step away and honor that grief in private.  If you know someone experiencing this hardship, give them space.  Allow them to breathe and feel their grief.  We all grieve in our own time and in our own way.
Final thought:  Try to overlook or accept that our families aren’t perfect.   Don’t take things personal and  give others extra compassion during the holidays. Even those crowds at the mall. Doing so may give you the best holiday year ever.

Tools to Help with the Stress

There are six complimentary meditations available on our website to help you with this holiday’s stress.  These include: Present Moments, Compassion for Others, Self-Compassion, Self-Forgiveness, and Unconditional Love.  I hope they help!
