February 2017

February is the month of Valentines, the day to acknowledge your romantic love for a partner with cards, gifts, candy, or candlelight dinner.  Yet there is no special day designated in the calendar where you celebrate the loving, intimate relationship with yourself.  After all, the longest relationship you will ever have in your lifetime is the one you have with yourself.
Question: “Isn’t loving yourself considered selfish?”
Many of us were not modeled healthy intimacy as a child.  We were not taught, and maybe even discouraged to love ourselves. We were told it was not nice or even considered bragging.  Loving yourself does not mean self-worship or narcissism. It means giving yourself love, respect, forgiveness, kindness, and taking good care of yourself.  So, no, self-love does not equal selfishness.
Question“Why is self-love important?”
Answer:  Self-love equates to your self-worth.  And when you don’t feel worthy, you don’t take care of your feelings and needs which leads you to being out of balance mentally and physically.  When you give yourself unconditional love, you know you are worthy of taking care of yourself by honoring your feelings and taking care of your needs to get in balance on all levels. That is why it is so important to give yourself the love you need, first.  Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you.  The best relationship you can have is the one you have with yourself.
Question“What can I do to feel more self-love?”
Answer:  There are many things you can do.  First, just be kind to yourself.  We often say things to ourselves that we would never say to someone we love.  Stop tormenting yourself.  Instead, give yourself a hug and accept that you’re okay; that you’re good enough just the way you are.  Give yourself some compassion and most importantly, forgive yourself.  Then do something nice for yourself.  Give yourself a valentine, write yourself a love letter, or buy yourself flowers.  Just focus on giving yourself the gift of love in as many ways possible.  Be creative.
So, this month make a conscious choice to love your body unconditionally, talk kindly to yourself, and every day, do something fun . . . just for you.
