To visit Nachusa Grasslands is to see conservation at its most vivid and inspiring. Home to 700 native plant species, 180 bird species and a growing bison herd, Nachusa is one of The Nature Conservancy's greatest success stories. The vast expanse of tallgrass prairie, savanna and woodlands is a sanctuary for both nature and people.
To create an engaging and dynamic experience for visitors, the Conservancy is planning to add new amenities and educational opportunities. A beautiful new structure will invite the public to learn about the nature of this rare Illinois landscape and the Conservancy’s work to conserve and restore this precious heritage.
With interpretive panels that tell the story of Nachusa Grasslands; a shady spot to enjoy the view of the prairie; parking and other facilities, including a hand pump for fresh water, visitors are guaranteed an experience they won’t forget.

Our plans also call for formal pull-off areas to appreciate different perspectives on the preserve.
Inspired by the long-time dedication of Susan and Bill Kleiman, the Hamill Family Foundation has committed $1 million to create a 2:1 challenge that will deliver an unparalleled learning experience at Nachusa. If you’re interested in supporting this project, please contact Annie Santoro, the Conservancy's Major Gifts Manager, at 312-580-2152.
