E Pluribus Unum
This 4th of July we celebrate 244 years of being united, free, and a democracy. Thirteen colonies declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and adopted the motto E Pluribus Unum – Out of Many…One. It is on our Great Seal, on our coins, and on our dollar bill. It has also been on my mind these days. The Founders of the United States struggled with fundamental issues and were often in disagreement about the rights of people, property, centers of power, and religion. Yet our union was formed because people believed that our greatness was possible in working together.
America continues to struggle with many of the same fundamental issues. Today they take the form of social injustice and inequality, access to affordable health care, immigration policy, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and systemic inequities in politics and business. We have an opportunity - a responsibility to each other and to our country - to become informed and take an active part in addressing these issues, together, for our common good.
This is a time for compassion, open-minded civil debate, fresh ideas, political innovation, and a commitment to constructive problem solving. We all have many labels, but what defines and unites us is that we believe in the high ideals of justice and equality promised by the Declaration of Independence. America is a 244 year work in progress and now is a critical moment in history to take a great step forward. Our union continues to be our strength and together we will move forward.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!
