VOL. 18      09-25
Monthly mixtape, curated to be listened to in order. We always end it classy here.

Hey there 👋

Happy Saturday my fellow listeners! Four days ago was the Moon Festival, where back home in Taiwan we would usually gather with our family to celebrate with barbecue, moon cakes and pomelo fruits. On this day (technically the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar), the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size. It's especially on this day—despite being 7797 miles away from home—I know that when I look up, I am marveling at the same luminescent moon that my family had looked at, and am therefore connected.

In many ways, that sentiment is what I am trying to achieve with this playlist. Wherever you are and however you are feeling, I hope that through the simple act of listening to this playlist, you know that you are sharing the same sound space with 78 other listeners and that we're in it together.

One of my favorite aspects of listening to music is that it's the closest thing we get to time traveling. I still remember vividly when I first saw the movie Drive in 2011 at a theater in LA and was completely blown away by the soundtrack and music supervision. The retro and synth-driven melody arcs reminiscent of the 80s were a sound I was unfamiliar with (I was born in the early 90s) and was instantaneously hooked by. When Stranger Things came out in 2016, the title sequence was so memorable that the sounds of "synthwave" and "retrowave" have since been part of my steady diet of music.

Song Highlights

Iridescent - Forhill

There’s a 70% chance you are going to add this track to your playlist for working/studying after listening to it.

Deep Blue - The Midnight

I've been a big fan of this band ever since their debut album in 2014. Apparently, Chris Evans, aka Captain America, is a fan as well!

Montrose - Le Matos

This song makes me miss my car and driving in California. It's the kind of anthem I would have blasted while cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway without a care in the world.

Hall of Mirrors - Let's Eat Grandma

This female power duo hasn't put out any new music since 2018 so I'm excited to see them come back with a hell of a swing.
