PAHO and the Prime Minister of Haiti work together to strengthen health system preparedness for COVID-19 
The Director of the Department of Health Systems and Services, James Fitzgerald, met with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Haiti, Joseph Jouthe, during a technical mission to Haiti, from 17-19 March, to strengthen PAHO´s support in the country in preparedness to a possible introduction of COVID-19.

Countries in the Americas start monitoring the Plan of Action on Human Resources for Health  
On March 2020, PAHO/WHO launched the Monitoring System of the Plan of Action on Human Resources for Universal Access to Health and Universal Health Coverage 2018-2023, which reflects the commitments assumed by the countries of the Americas in 2017. [Available in Spanish]

New PAHO publication on addressing the challenges of regulatory systems strengthening in small states 
PAHO has assessed national regulatory capacities using a precursor of WHO Global Benchmarking Tool, and conducted an analysis of the data which suggests an association of regulatory capacity with population and the size of the economy.

Belize became an associate member of the WHO Program for International Drug Monitoring
This accomplishment is the result of a focused effort from the government of Belize and PAHO to strengthen regulatory functions including registration, pharmacovigilance, and post market surveillance.

PAHO launches three courses on COVID-19 in Spanish
The Virtual Campus launched the Spanish version of three online courses to provide information and guidance to countries in the Americas in the response to the novel coronavirus. The courses were already available on the OpenWHO online learning platform in English, French and Portuguese.  All the courses are free and self-placed.

Emergency nursing in Jamaica
Trecia Simone Stewart is an emergency nurse working in a hospital situated between two major highways and what she describes as some “volatile” communities in Spanish Town, Jamaica. The hospital treats a large number of trauma patients with injuries including gunshot wounds and road traffic accidents. It has also recently had to manage a large dengue outbreak.
