How should the health sector respond to climate change? The Agenda for the Americas on Health, Environment and Climate Change urges health sector actors to focus their efforts on three strategic lines of action: improving environmental public health programs; fostering sustainable health systems; and promoting environmentally healthy communities.  Developed under the umbrella of the WHO Global Strategy on Health, Environment, and Climate Change, the Agenda builds on commitments in the Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas 2018–2030 and the PAHO Strategic Plan 2020–2025.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Mental, Neurological and Substance Use Services in the Americas: Results of a Rapid Assessment, June 2021
Mental health services, which were known to be under-resourced before the pandemic, have been further stretched by COVID-19’s impacts. With the aim of documenting the extent of service disruptions caused by the pandemic, this survey asked PAHO member states to provide data on the numbers and types of services affected, resource allocation under pandemic response plans, and actions taken to protect or extend service provision during this period. The findings provide valuable first-handinsights from countries and important data to inform recovery planning.

Snapshot of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities in the Americas During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned
COVID-19 starkly highlighted the vulnerability of older adults, along with the health systems and communities that support them. However, in places where age-friendly policies and services had been established before the pandemic, communities were able to adapt and mitigate its effects. This publication captures the experience and actions of certified age-friendly cities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lessons learned from these cities should contribute to a better understanding of how a positive approach to service provision for older people can increase resilience within the Region.
