From the Arena

Odessa College Rodeo (February 25-27, 2016):

Sam Powers qualified to the short round at the Odessa college rodeo in two events.  He placed 6th in the long round
of the calf roping posting a time of 10.8 seconds. in the short round. He did not draw the best animal to win with and
ended up with a time of 14.5 seconds, placing him 6th in the short round and 6th in the average.  In the steer wrestling
he won 2nd in the long round with a time of 4.5 seconds, in the short round he had trouble with the draw again and
posted a time of 7.0 seconds placing him 5th in the short round and 4/5th in the average. Kody Mahaffey qualified 9th to the short round in the calf roping at the Odessa college rodeo, posting a time of 12.2 seconds, in the short round he posted a time of  9.3 seconds splitting 2nd /3rd  in the short round and 3rd in the average.

Ranger College Rodeo (March 17-19, 2016):

Kody Mahaffey qualified to the short round in two events this weekend! He won 2nd in the long round in the calf roping with a time of a 9.0, but drew a bad calf in the short round that was slower than we thought, which caused him to break the barrier. Even so, he still won 6th place in the average, locking him into the 2nd place spot in the region. He also split 10/11 in the long round of the steer wrestling and posted a time of 5.1, which gave him the win in the round and 3rd in the average. Freshmen Kayne Partin qualified to the short round in 7th place and posted a time of 5.6 in the short round and wound up 2nd in the short round and 2nd in the average! All in all a good weekend for the Lobos! The Men's team is slowly gaining on the pack!

Upcoming rodeos for the Sul Ross Rodeo team include:
  • Western Tx College - March 31 - April 2, 2016
  • Howard College - April 7-9, 2016
  • Tarleton State University - April 21 - 23, 2016

2011 Reunion

Standings (as of 7 rodeos)

Kody Mahaffey is currently sitting 2nd right now in the calf roping with 535 points, 6th in the steer wrestling with 240 points, and only 100 points is separating him and the 3rd place steer wrestler.  He has a very strong chance of qualifying to the College National Finals in two events with three rodeos to go if he continues to have strong performances!  He is also sitting 2nd in the all-around with 775 points and only 110 points out of first! If he wins the all-around he will get to compete at the College National Finals in both his events.

Sam Powers is currently winning the South West Region in the steer wrestling with 465 points. He has a 55 point lead on the second place steer wrestler.

Kayne Partin is currently sitting 16th in the region in the steer wrestling with 100 points.  With a little luck at the last three rodeos, he, like Kody Mahaffey,  could challenge for the numbers 2 or 3 spot to qualify to the College National Finals!
Team Standings

Men’s Team

Right now the Men’s team is still holding down the number 6 position in the region with 1,350 points and only 720 points separating 6th - 2nd if everyone continues having the success they have been having in their events. We may just pull off a top three finish - something that has not been done in a long time!  The entire men’s team has been working very hard this year and it has been apparent by what everyone has done!

Women’s Team

The Women's team  is currently 14th in the region with only 15 points contributed by Bailey Burch in the breakaway.  It’s not for lack of effort by the women’s team - all 4 girls on the team have been working extremely hard
this year, but things just have not gone their way! From broken barriers or 11th place finishes, but they still show up and give it their all! I am very proud of the dedication and effort they have put forth this entire year!
