I am delighted to announce my arrival as the latest member of The Pathologist team! One of the first things that my colleagues told me when I joined was that the pathology and laboratory medicine community is a vibrant place full of strong personalities. I hope The Pathologist can continue to be a home for these voices: the movers and shakers who are driving advancements in the field; the up-and-coming lab professionals; the leaders of tomorrow who are working hard to make their mark; the researchers operating behind the scenes to expand our understanding of the causes of disease.
The strength of this community bodes well for pathology’s future, but we must proactively support the younger members of the community. So here’s my request: think of an early-career pathologist or lab professional who has impressed or surprised you, ideally someone from an underrepresented group in medicine who may be facing barriers to success. Reach out. Extend a helping hand. Champion them and support them as they overcome the obstacles on their path. Maybe even pitch an article about them! You’ll be making a huge difference.
I’d also like to recognize the passing of Rare Disease Day. I was fascinated to learn that it falls on the rarest day of the year, February 29 (February 28 for non-leap years). To mark the occasion, we’ve shared Christine Ko’s insights into the stigma of rare skin diseases and the social media’s potential to spread negative perceptions of patients across the globe.
If you have any thoughts on rare disease – or pathology in general – please get in touch at edit@thepathologist.com.
Until next time,
Bibiana Campos Seijo, Senior Editor
