I am having an on-again-off-again staring contest with a certain spot on my floor. I can’t even remember where it came from. I wish it would disappear, but it shamelessly reminds me of so many things that are waiting for my attention. Like many teachers, the beginning of the school year means I only have time for the most necessary tasks which means the smudge of something or another will have to wait.
I know it won’t always be just like this. But I also know, it will always be a little bit like this. Things left undone or not quite the way I would’ve liked. There will always be mini-crisis. Like this month’s plumbing problem or the tragic death of our slow cooker last week. If I trust that God himself orders my steps, then I can surrender to his hands and take it day by day.
Here’s where we are today. We are through the first week of school! 2/3 of the middle school students are new to us this year. Also new this year, I am teaching four, rather than two, classes. I am teaching 6th, 7th and two sections of 8th grade Health. Dave is back in his role as 6th, 7th and 8th grade social studies. His classroom has a set of laptops this year and he is off to a good start in the transition to a paperless classroom. There have even been a few days when none of his students have cried.
The A-team is taking on elementary together! Annora is very glad to be back with her class and has been spotted sitting in their midst silently soaking up their conversation with a contented smile on her face. Allister really likes to go to school where he can see his older friends during the day. He hasn’t been anxious about school since he dove in and we are thankful that he feels safe. Annalise has had a couple trips to the nurse for bandages already, but she still looks forward to going to school each day. Having a good friend from church in her class and a teacher that wears high heels helps a lot.
And just like that, the 2017-2018 school year is underway. We are so thankful to be back at ICSB doing what God has commissioned us to do and for you our daily partners.
