The past month has been filled with travels up and down the Front Range attending training, participating in regional open-houses, and spending time with extended family. While it has made a routine virtually impossible for our family, we have managed to stay together for all but one week of our time in the U.S.
The exception was when I (Dave) traveled to a university in California to attend a history-education seminar. I was excited to go because the instructors are leading the nation in question-driven teaching techniques. I have been using question-driven lessons for years, but I want to improve their effectiveness at ICSB.
I was not disappointed; the training was phenomenal! I am excited to integrate the concepts I learned while I was there into the history curriculum as I continue to work on it over the course of our home assignment. It was also great to network with other teachers and see how they are addressing common problems in their classrooms.
I am very thankful to have been able to attend at all. The course I attended was sold out in one day – and I did not have one of the spots! I signed up on the waiting list. Then, just for good measure, I emailed the organizer of the seminar to explain that I am not normally in the U.S. and how I hoped to use what I learned in the classroom. Then I prayed!
The next day I received a reply. As it turned out, someone had dropped the course, and while I was not at the top of the waiting list, my persuasive email was enough to secure the empty slot! I was incredibly thankful and excited, knowing full well that God was the real reason I had been given the spot.
I am certain God is going to use what I learned to help train students to think more critically from a biblical worldview. And that made the time away from my wonderful wife and kids worth it!
