Being a Farmer is  Year Round Job!

Just because the growing season has come to an end, doesn't mean our local farmers aren't still "working". There is much pre-season work that happens year round to ensure they can bring you bounties of healthy, safe and affordable foods during the farmers market season. Many farmers use the off-season to build the capacity of the growers, of their operations and strengthening their networks.

Your local Food Business Entrepreneurs have grand dreams of what is possible; as we all work towards developing a fair, just and sustainable local food system.

See you next season.......

Urban Agriculture and Local Food Symposium
Thursday, November 12th, 2015 9:00 AM - Noon
University of MN Urban Outreach & Engagement Center (UROC)
2001 Plymouth Ave. N., Minneapolis, MN 55411

How are we doing along the road to a more environmentally sound and socially just agriculture?
What will it take to make it so?
Is your farming operation financially sustainable?
Is it personally sustainable?

University of Minnesota Extension-Hennepin County is hosting a symposium for those who are striving to make full or part-time living producing and processing food for local markets in the Twin Cities Metro Region.

We will be showcasing promising financial models and leaning from veteran practitioners in the field on what it will take to make it work. Farming has too often meant long hours of hard work with low pay and few benefits. Can local food production be a satisfying livelihood without breaking the bank or our backs?

Minnesota Food Association is currently accepting applications for the 2016 season for our Farmer Training Program!

We are looking for immigrant, minority, or individuals from other historically-underrepresented backgrounds that have an interest in organic farming commercially as a business, as opposed to personal gardening. All levels of experience are welcome. The program is land-based and located in Marine on St Croix, about 10 minutes north of Stillwater. Some resources are required to cover program costs, transportation, and materials.
If you or someone you know is excited about farming as a business, please contact me or attend our upcoming info session on Tuesday,  November 17th, 6:00-8:00 PM at Hmong American Partnership, 1075 Arcade St, St Paul MN 55106.

We Increased Our Visibility This Season

We celebrated some media coverage this season as we press to get our message out about the important work of the West Broadway Farmers Market. We celebrate our strong partnerships we have worked to leverage to enhance Federal investments to North Minneapolis around healthy food access.

West Broadway Farmers Market Celebrates Five Years of Success - CPED Newsletter
With goals to grow social capital, public space in North Minneapolis, and local food businesses, the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition (WBC) began the West Broadway Farmers Market (WBFM) five years ago as a strategy to increase access to healthy food options, increase neighborhood vitality, and support the local food economy.

Northside Nutrition
Health is tied to geography, and in Minnesota children born in neighborhoods with the highest concentrations of poverty — like those in north Minneapolis — are expected to live 6.6 years less than children born in affluent neighborhoods.

Interview: Minnesota's 'Appetite For Change' Gets Big BoostWe are excited to partner with AFC on the Northside Fresh Community Foods Project.

A local grassroots organization just got a big boost. Appetite for Change was awarded more than a quarter million dollars in grant money from the USDA. The group has a mission of giving people access to good food no matter where they live or how much money people have.

How to Create the Perfect Public Food Market

"As any regular farmers’ market visitor knows, a good market is about more than buying food—it’s about striking up conversations, exchanging information, feeling part of a community and actively contributing to it. Along with subways and buses, a public food market is one of the only places left for people of different economic classes to encounter one another, and even ... strike up a conversation."

The WBFM is looking for sponsors for the 2016 season!

Our sponsors help make healthy food more accessible,  view our sponsorship materials.
