2nd Issue February 2019

Editorial

Currently we are very excited to see that our latest book "Building Development Studies for the New Millennium" is so well received and keep constantly adding to the related blog and webinar series. Apart from that, we are busy finalising our 2018 annual report and are just about to start the preparations for this year's Directors' Meeting. Another event in our pipeline is the 2019 World Science Forum in Budapest, where we are planning to host a session. And, as usual, we have collected the latest calls, vacancies, blogs and publications.
Save the Date: EADI Directors' Meeting 2019
We are happy to announce that this year's Directors' Meeting will take place in the beautiful city of Cordoba on 17 and 18 October 2019. The event will kindly be hosted by a consortium of EADI members in Spain: REEDES, Instituto Elcano, ICEI and ETEA Foundation.

Once again, our annual Directors' Meeting will be a good opportunity to further connect research institutes for more effective cooperation by sharing ideas, identifying common problems and discussing new trends.  In Europe, there is no better occasion for institute directors to meet, exchange and discuss!

The topical focus of this year's meeting will be the 2030 Agenda, with emphasis on the Latin American perspective and an overarching focus on the practical application of public policies. The meeting will consist of several panels, aiming to build connections between member institutes and the 50 to 80 expected participants. Read more

From our Blog
Today, we've got another post from our #DevStudies4Millennium Series for you. Rather than simply summarising his book chapter on hegemonic global power relations and structural asymmetries in knowledge production in African realities, Henning Melber
highlights the critiques and pitfalls in the decolonisation discourse. Drawing on examples from South Africa, he explains why the awareness of asymmetries does not eliminate the risk of reproducing them. "Knowledge, Asymmetric Power Relations and Us" Read the post

Highlight: Social Protection in East Africa
This  study  by the OECD Development Centre is now available in open access. It identifies possible  futures and explores new paths for action in six countries in East Africa – Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. It highlights seven grand challenges that confront social  protection policy makers in the region and discusses which policy directions are most appropriate for tackling today’s social protection needs and preparing for those of tomorrow. A number of these challenges, such as rapid population growth and urbanisation, persistent informality, low domestic resource mobilisation and climate change, are common to sub-Saharan Africa as a whole; the methodology and  approach used here will be applicable to many other countries across the region. The Institut du développement durable et des relations internationales (IDDRI) in France defines itself as a a think tank to facilitate the transition towards sustainable development. IDDRI is an independent policy research institute and a multi-stakeholder dialogue platform who identifies the conditions and proposes tools to put sustainable development at the heart of international relations and public and private policies, with the research areas biodiversity, climate, oceans and governance.
Last week, IDDRI's study "An agroecological Europe in 2050: multifunctional agriculture for healthy eating" has received quite a good media echo. The study claims that chemical pesticides can be phased out and greenhouse gas emissions radically reduced in Europe through agroecological farming, while still producing enough nutritious food for an increasing population. But it says action is needed now, with the next 10 years critical in engaging Europe in the transition. This would require moving towards diets that contain fewer animal products therefore opens up prospects for a transition to a less productive agro-ecological system. Read more
