2nd Issue April 2020

Editorial

Like everybody else we are trying to cope with the situation imposed by the COVID 19 pandemic, and have, for the time being, shifted all our activities online. In order to provide a good overview of the virtual events organised by our member community, we have started collecting members' free online activities on our homepage. And we are hiring: The Energy Supply for Healthcare Facilities in Ghana (EnerSHelF) project we're part of is looking for a project and communications assistant in part time. Not to forget our call for moderators for online events on development studies which is still open for the rest of this week. For all other news, calls and vacancies, take the usual scroll!
New: Free Online Activities by our Members
Last week we've just started collecting free webinars and other online activities offered by our members in one place. This way we hope to make it easier for everybody to find suitable learning opportunities in #StayAtHome times. However, as we have just started, the collection is far from being complete. If you're an institutional member and would like us to place your online activities on our homepage, please let us know and send us an email!
Wanted: Project and Communications Assistant (50%)
If you're experienced with research communications and stakeholder engagement processes and are fluent in English and German, you might want to become our new colleague. You will be part of the international interdisciplinary team of the EnerShelf project and will also support our small and dynamic team at the EADI office in Bonn. We can promise that it will be an interesting position with manifold tasks. Submit by 23 April! Read more
New on our Blog: The Battle is on: Civic Space & Land Rights
How to tackle land rights in a complex environment? Barbara Oosters and Saskia van Veen from Oxfam Novib  went on a journey to different countries to "learn from a variety of contexts on how people resist, adapt and reclaim civic space". Their vision: "bringing them together in a unique participatory learning way in order for all parties to gain from this exchange. As an end-product we envisage a toolbox with actionable tactics that help to resist, adapt and reclaim civic space while working on land rights." Most interestingly, they have summarized what works well and what doesn't. Read more
Upcoming EADI Webinar:  29 April, 3:00pm CET
Why do the poor stay poor? And, crucially, why are their children likely to be poor and end up poor later in life? Based on a qualitative panel dataset from Bangladesh, the webinar "Generational Transfer of Disadvantages and Extreme Poverty" with Owasim Akram will bring important policy and programme insights to tackle extreme poverty. The webinar is based on a recent article in the EJDR. Read more and register

Highlight: The Politics of Social Inclusion
This open access book “The Politics of Social Inclusion: Bridging Knowledge and Policies Towards Social Change” presents extensive case studies from across the world to provide critical perspectives on the concepts of social inclusion and exclusion. A collaboration between UNESCO and the Comparative Research Programme on Poverty (CROP), this volume  traces a number of discourses, all of them routed in a relational power analysis, examining them in the context of the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 with its commitment to “leave no one behind.” Read more
