Editorial

Highly motivated we are back from this year's EADI Directors' Meeting last week in Vienna and came home with a rich harvest of ideas and inspirations. Now it is time to digest this abundance of input and see how to best feed it into concrete projects and actions. Stay in touch, we will keep you updated! For a start, we have included brief summaries of the the meeting's opening panel and the embedded public conference on Africa-EU relations below. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants of the meeting for their enthusiastic engagement and very lively discussions!
Statement of Solidarity with KEF
The first very tangible outcome of our Directors' Meeting was a statement of solidarity with the Austrian Commission for Development Research (KEF) whose funding will be terminated after 37 years of excellent work. The statement was signed by 40 participants of the meeting and sent to the Austrian Federal Minister of Education Science and Research: "In our capacity as representatives of leading development research institutes around Europe we stand in solidarity with our Austrian colleagues. Therefore, we appeal to the Ministry to revisit this decision. Terminating KEF would not only thwart decades of investment in a highly effective institution, but also damage the European and international collective efforts to build trustworthy partnerships with countries and people from the global South." Read the full statement here and feel free to circulate it widely through your communication channels.
Directors’ Meeting: Update on EU Development Policy
What are the key features of last year’s development consensus of the European Union? How have the EU’s role and its financial instruments changed over the years and what is the status implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the EU? Our Directors’ Meeting last week kicked off with some reflections on these issues:

Controversial Perspectives: Africa-EU Relations
Alongside our Directors' Meeting we had, in cooperation with the Austrian Foundation for Development Research, a public conference on Africa-EU relations to highlight the importance of the relationship between these two continents and offer space for discussions, information and facts about economic and political strategies from different perspectives. Considering the economic and geopolitical strategies of China in Africa on the one hand and the international consensus of implementing the Sustainable Development agenda on the other hand, it is evident that new political commitments and strategies are much needed. The event showcased quite controversial perspectives and made clear that there are no easy solutions at hand. Read our brief summary of the conference here

The Rethinking Research Collaborative (RRC) is an informal international network of academics, civil society organisations and social movements, international NGOs, and research support providers who are committed to working together to explore the politics of evidence and participation in knowledge for international development. It aims to encourage more inclusive, responsive and transformative collaboration to improve the production of useful research for social justice and global development. Working in partnership is increasingly encouraged in the international development research sector. This new report and learning resources offer fresh insights into how collaboration works in practice and how it might be improved.

Re-thinking emancipation in “Latin America” and the de-colonial project, 25 Oktober, 2pm
The “idea” of Latin American is the result of a historical process that involves a terrible vicious cycle of binaries, understood from the sphere of Western, Eurocentric and hegemonic power.  After more than 150 years of the independence or emancipation narrative it is necessary to start re-thinking: what emancipation really means. With Juan Fernando Larco Guevara: Register here
