Editorial

Still shocked by the raging war in Ukraine, we have set our thematic focus on wars and conflicts today, hoping to offer some helpful perspectives. Apart from that we've got a bunch of highlights: a MOOC, a conference, a book launch and a new analysis of global development constellations. And of course our latest blog post, which summarises seven shortcomings in reflecting on EU development policy. As always, vacancies, calls, events and blogs are at the bottom.
From our Blog: (Un)Learning EU Development Policy

(Un)learning EU development policy through post-colonial lenses

"Post-colonialism cannot merely be the ‘latest fad’ in academic scholarship and ‘just another view’ that one may or may not decide to ‘do’ when researching EU foreign aid policy", writes Jan Orbie in our latest blog post. Based on as special issue of "Global Affairs" on Development and International Partnerships in the EU’s external relations, he has identified seven shortcomings showing that some of the problematic biases of EU foreign aid literature continue to be reproduced. Book Launch: The Unseen Faces of COVID-19, 17 March

How the pandemic affects climate, education, and inequality:

How has the current pandemic affected global poverty and development outcomes that were gained over decades? What challenges do low-income countries face due to COVID-19?
These urgent questions have been addressed by a diverse group of development experts, affiliated to the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) and other international organizations. Join the launch of the related book online on 17 March! Read more
Highlight: Beyond Rich and Poor

Beyond rich and poor: Identifying global development constellations

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most recent example that global development problems can occur anywhere, rebutting the assumption of a world divided into developed and developing countries. Recent scholarship has coined the term “global development” to capture this changing geography of development problems. The article by researchers from the German Development Institute, Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) proposes a novel empirical approach to localize global development problems in country contexts worldwide.
