Editorial

This is an exciting week for us: right after yesterday's webinar on research collaboration which will be available online in due course, we are heading to our second research communications workshop for our member institutes and look forward to another round of fruitful exchange with around 25 participants! And of course we continue to be very busy with the preparations of our 2020 General Conference "Solidarity, Peace and Social Justice" where we have just selected the workshop and roundtable sessions. Not to forget the usual pick of publications calls and vacancies from our member community we've collected for your further down.
#eadi2020iss: Workshop and Roundtable Sessions Online!
After the publication of the seed and harvest panels along with the call for abstracts in the last newsletter, we are now happy to announce our selection of workshop and roundtable sessions for the conference. As it covers a wide range of topics and tools, we are sure that everyone will be able to find something new and inspiring. And the conference will be including a variety of innovative formats; this is why some of the workshops are very practice-oriented, for example on turning abstracts into a vlog.
From our Blog: Controversial Discussions on the SDGs

A geographical approach to the 2030 Agenda" at the recent EADI Directors’ Meeting in Cordoba raised more questions than it provided answers – which did not come unexpected, given that the SDGs are far from being implemented in any country of the world. At the same time, all discussants agreed that the world requires more than typical business-as-usual approaches. But as always, the devil is in the detail… Read more

Highlight: The Business of Building Walls
This brandnew report by the Transnational Institute explores the business of building walls in Europe, which has both fuelled and benefited from a massive expansion of public spending on border security by the European Union (EU) and its member states. The main beneficiaries of this development are the businesses involved, some of them also global players who tap into a global market for border security estimated to be worth approximately €17.5 billion in 2018, with annual growth of at least 8% expected in coming years. It is important to look both beyond and behind Europe’s walls and fencing, because the real barriers to contemporary migration are not so much the fencing, but the vast array of technology that underpins it, from the radar systems to the drones to the surveillance cameras to the biometric fingerprinting systems.
