January 2016 meetup

Thursday, January 28th

January's meetup is this Thursday the 28th from 7-9pm. Our hosts are Eddie Ciletti of Manhattan Sound Technicians and Adam Tucker of Signaturetone Recording. This will be a fun, interactive evening as we pick both Eddie's & Adam's brains.

Thanks to all who voted, we've zeroed in on topics for the evening. Eddie will have a few different stations for us to explore:

  • GENERAL STATION: There will be a table set up in the main studio with LED labs, voltmeters and worksheets / handouts. Eddie will give a 15 minute electronics overview, including how a multimeter can be used to measure volts amps and ohms.
  • AMP STATION: We'll have at least one guitar amp set up with a schematic to show where the test points are and how the measurement / adjustment is done - both with the meter and calculating based on a web-based app that suggests the optimum bias setting for the tube type and the voltage measured at the tube, which is upwards of 450 volts!!!
  • SOLDER STATION: We have wooden blocks each with a male and female panel-mount XLR connector, a convenient aid that allows connectors to be plugged in - for stability while soldering.

From the Signaturetone Recording website: “Signaturetone is an independent recording studio located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Featuring a comfortable and relaxed aesthetic, a professional-yet-laid-back staff, and a wide variety of top-shelf vintage and modern analog gear, our facility offers a unique recording experience for artists and projects of almost any size or scope.”

Eddie Ciletti is an engineer, technician, educator, author, and more. If you haven't met him yet you definitely won't want to miss this meetup! From his website, here are a few of the things he does through Manhattan Sound Technicians: "I provide a variety of audio recording-related services. I can do the work or consult and guide you through the process:

  • Repairs
  • Gear Restoration
  • Audio Restoration
  • Recording, Mixing and Production
  • Mastering
  • Budget Studio Design: Basically, what not to do.
