Kupu's 2014 Annual Report Now Available

In 2014 Kupu served 257 youth through its programs. Together with volunteers, these youth contributed over 233,000 hours of service which resulted in nearly $7 million in economic benefits to the community. Kupu's 7th Annual MLK Day of Service Was a Success!

Kupu's 7th Annual MLK Day was held at Ulupo Heiau State Park, where nearly 70 volunteers and 20 Kupu Staff helped clear invasive grasses from the native wetland bird habitat, created an outdoor amphitheater for volunteer groups, and cleared and prepped lo'i for planting. Following the work day, we enjoyed a locally sourced lunch of lu'au stew, watercress and tomato salad, and uala. Mahalo to Ulupo, Kupu Staff, and our wonderful volunteers for a job well done!

Kupu Staff Member Gave Talk at TEDx Honolulu

Hayden Atkins, a Kupu alumni and current staff member, gave a presentation on bicycle power at the TEDx Honolulu talk, held March 28th, 2015 at the University of Hawaii's Campus Center. Click the link below for a recap and footage of all the talks given. Great job Hayden!

Kupu Receives Accreditation by the Corps Center of Excellence (CCE)

Kupu recently underwent a rigorous evaluation during the accreditation process with the Corps Center of Excellence (CCE). The CCE grants accreditation to corps across the country who can demonstrate safe, meaningful and beneficial programs. Kupu Celebrates Launch of the Wa'a Project!

On January 10th, dozens of people gathered at Sand Island State Recreational Area to celebrate the culmination of 75 days of work by nearly 700 volunteers to build and launch the Ellen Eoreni, a Micronesian voyaging canoe. The project was guided by Plasito, son of navigation legend Mau Piailug, along with the support of the Kanehunamoku Voyaging Society, Kokua Kalihi Valley, and Kupu's CommunityU Program.

E2U Partners with YMCA For New Program During School Breaks

During the 2014 DOE winter break, Kupu's E2U Program partnered with the YMCA to provide over 30 sixth through eighth grade students with a week-long "Mauka-to-Makai" environmental experience. Kupu is looking forward to continuing the program for each school break.

Kupu Staff Meet With Hawaii Congressional Delegates in Washington DC

Some of Kupu's Staff, including John Leong (Kupu CEO) and Matt Bauer (Kupu COO) were in Washington DC for the annual Corps Network Conference in February. While there, they were able to meet with some of our local Congressional Delegates and share about the great things happening with Kupu and conservation here in Hawaii. Pictured above are John and Matt with Representative Tulsi Gabbard (left) and Senator Mazie Hirono (right). Representative Gabbard recently received the "Outstanding New Member Award" from the Voices for National Service for Elevating National Service as a first term legislative priority.
