Welcome to the fifteenth edition of our e-newsletter!

This month we have some good news about charities in the UK, lots of training opportunities, some details of events and, last but not least: our funders of the week.

News

Charitable UK - Good News for Charities

It may come as a bit of surprise to learn that despite all the government cuts and rising prices, the UK is top of the developed world for giving money to charity.  Results from the Charities Aid Foundation research revealed that 76% of the population give money and 29% give time to charitable causes in a typical month.  Also, the UK public are quick to respond to high profile appeals.  Full details can be found below.

Training

Benefits Awareness Course

Free training: SO18 Big Local have asked SARC (Southampton Advice and Representation Centre) to deliver a Benefits Awareness Course to help those volunteering/working locally to get a better understanding of the system - what benefits still exist, which ones are changing for newer claimants, and which ones are being replaced – along with a clear and easy to understand explanation of how the rules really work.

The course takes place on Monday 24th February, 09:30-13:00 at Townhill Park Community Centre. Places are FREE but must be booked in advance - if demand is high, a second session may be booked.

Adult Education Courses

Oasis Academy Mayfield offers services and activities for the local community. Great facilities with a range of Adult Learning opportunities, sports and leisure facilities, fitness classes and other community services are available.

Free Parent Advice Workshops

Free training: Oasis Mayfield Community Hub are working in partnership with professional organisations to provide free workshops to help and support for parents from the local community .
Helping parents to understand their children. Sessions include:

 
  • Anti-Bullying
  • E-Safety
  • Drug Awareness
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Emotional First-Aid

Parliamentary Outreach - Train the Trainer - London 2014

Free training: The programme is based around a training resource which has been designed so that organisations are able themselves to deliver training and information about Parliament and how people can engage effectively.

Alcohol and Medication Use in the Over 50s

Free training: Increase awareness of the impact of drinking alcohol and taking medication has on health and wellbeing, learn how to calculate a unit of alcohol, discuss the Department of Health recommendations on unit consumption for adults over 50 and 65+, look at the impact of alcohol and medication use on the individual and their family, confidential advice, information & FREEBIES!

12th February 2014 - Darwin Day

Darwin Day is an international celebration of science and humanity held on or around February 12, the day that Charles Darwin was born on in 1809. Specifically, it celebrates the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin — the man who first described biological evolution via natural selection with scientific rigor.
