Welcome to the November edition of the Heart of the South West (HotSW) Skills Newsletter.

Firstly I would like to introduce myself as the new Chair of the HotSW LEP People Group, taking over from Rachel Davies.

Amongst other initiatives, the leadership group will be strongly engaged on the people focused activities under the European Structural and Investment Funds Strategy (EUSIF), including Employment, Skills and Social Inclusion.

This month the skills newsletter gives an update on the Big Lottery funding designed to support the voluntary sector. We've also included details on the MTI14 event which saw 150 students attend.

A number of skills events are being planned across the area and we've included details on these, with some more information on the Big Data event.

Please contact us if you have any news you would like us to include in future editions of the newsletter.

Stephen Criddle, Chair, HotSW LEP People Group, LEP Board member, Principal and CEO, South Devon College.

Save the date: Unlocking Big Data event

As mentioned in the September newsletter, an event focused on the skills requirements around Big Data is being planned and the date has now been confirmed as Wednesday 28th January 2015.

The fully interactive event is being planned to shape the conversation, examine the skills we need to invest in and define the focus for potential future funding proposals.

The event will include opportunities to meet the Heart of the South West’s Big Data community in one of the World’s leading Big Data organisations.

The December newsletter will feature full details on how to book your place.  For further information please contact Oenone Thomas.

Students attend MTI14

Over 150 students from across Torbay and South Devon attended one of the South West's largest annual exhibitions, MTI14.

The students, aged between 14 and 24, attended the Manufacturing Technology and Innovation (MTI) event held last month.

The day consisted of a variety of activities from the opportunity to talk to over 45 professional exhibiting businesses about their companies, job roles and products.

This included the highly successful tSpace’s Engineering: Your Future sessions, which saw five of Torbay’s leading technology manufacturers engage with the students through competitions, challenges, demonstrations, videos and presentations.

The sessions focused on how engineering technology is a prominent industry sector in Torbay, offering a variety of skilled opportunities to people in the local area.

MTI14 was a great success and allowed the companies of today to meet their workforce of tomorrow.

For more information about the MTI14 event please click here.

Employment and Skills Conference - now fully subscribed

The Employment and Skills Conference announced in the October skills newsletter is now fully subscribed.  We will provide an update on the event in the next newsletter with links to conference materials as appropriate.

Lottery funding awarded to help voluntary sector access EU funding

South West Forum has successfully secured a contract from the Big Lottery Fund for partnership development work around the ‘Building Better Opportunities’ Fund in the Heart of the South West LEP area.

Building Better Opportunities is a £260m fund designed to leverage European funding for projects across England that tackle poverty and promote social inclusion.

The partnership development funding aims to:
  • ensure there is widespread awareness of the opportunities available at the main funding stage
  • create a point of contact for queries
  • bring together interested organisations, including those from the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector, to discuss local need and how best to tackle local priorities.
