Special Interest and Sectoral Groups - register your interest.

As reported in the last newsletter, HotSW's Business Forum is establishing a number of specialist groups to provide the LEP with sectoral advice and the latest business intelligence.

The HotSW website now contains further details about each of these groups, with details on their aims and priorities.

We are currently planning the inaugural meetings for the groups, which will be held in the near future.

The meeting dates will be circulated when available and will also be published on the website.

We are therefore asking people to register their interest in the groups by visiting the HotSW website and completing a short form.

The groups are:
  • low carbon
  • transport
  • initial planning.
To find out more about each group, please visit the HotSW website.

Driving change...

Since 2012, HotSW has:
  • Attracted more than £25m of Government funding to kick start the areas' economy, create new jobs and improve earnings.
  • Developed a package of Rural Businesses support with Devon County Council and Somerset County Council, expected to boost the economy by £40 million.
  • Been instrumental in securing pinch point funding worth £13.6m for road improvement projects.
  • Successfully lobbied for transition status for the area for a share in EU funds.
  • Worked with partners to gain City Deal status for Plymouth and in the campaign for fast Broadband.
Overall, the LEP has made a powerful impact and has seen some real results which we are confident will continue throughout 2013 and beyond.

City Deal - Plymouth shortlisted

The role of Plymouth as a hub to drive the economy across the Heart of the South West is more assured with the announcement that the city has been shortlisted for City Deal status.

The Heart of the South West (HotSW) LEP has welcomed the news from the Government, which will enable Plymouth and its surrounding area to increase productivity through a variety of initiatives focused on marine technology and assets.

The City Deal initiative is a new programme designed to unlock the growth potential of urban areas in England.

Tim Jones, Chair of HotSW said: “We are delighted that Plymouth is one of the preferred areas in this highly competitive second wave of bids.

“This deal is not just about Plymouth – it’s about a much wider area that can radiate the benefits across the entire peninsula."

Plymouth now has nine months to further develop its plans and agree the final terms for a City Deal.

Note from the Business Forum Chair

Chris Marrow, newly elected Business Forum Chair says: "It is an honour to have been elected to the Chair of the Business Forum, and I will do everything that I can to further the goals of the LEP.
“A lot of hard work has been put in during the formative months of the LEP, but we are now starting to reap the benefits - the Business Forum is now well placed to provide the two-way channel between the LEP board and the business community.
"As detailed in this newsletter, special interest groups are being formed, and the Business Forum will feed information into these groups.
"Please join us, as the input of all business people is going to be invaluable: it is your chance to help mould economic development in our region.
“In return our work with the main LEP board will give us unique access to Whitehall thinking and policy making and ensure that the business view can be accurately reflected as we move towards more devolved decision making.”
