Exciting Progress for the Heart of the South West

This month we’ve seen some real progress in the delivery of our Strategic Economic Plan.

Wednesday 8th October was a momentous day for the LEP with the signing of the Growth Deal which secured £270m investment for the area. This happened on the same day as the government announced the go-ahead for Hinkley Point C, the first of 10 new power stations in the UK.

The new public/private sector funded power station is the first in the country of the new wave of energy providers.  It gives us the opportunity to be a UK leader and develop a robust legacy for improving skills and job opportunities on the back of this £17bn investment.

The LEP’s role in this scheme is to make sure that before the moment the shovels hit the ground, we have plans in place that will deliver real benefits to local businesses and people.

The Hinkley scheme will create jobs in the construction industry and related supply chains, as well as boosting the infrastructure and community amenities in the wider area as never before.

The Growth Deal, which was signed off by Minister for Universities, Science and Cities, Greg Clark brings £130.3m of government funding and a further £140m from local partners and the public sector to create up to 13,000 jobs, 8,000 new homes and improvements to skills and connectivity.

These announcements are the latest successes in the LEP’s mission to reposition the Heart of the South West as a leading location for business and growth.

The Heart of the South West LEP People Group is hosting a conference which will take place next month (14th November).

The Employment and Skills event will include workshops, the chance to ask questions and an opportunity to provide input and ideas into the future commissioning of work in this area.

The conference is aimed at organisations, businesses and individuals in the Heart of the South West area with an interest in the LEP’s ‘People’ theme – Employment, Skills and Social Inclusion.
