Hinkley Programme agreed with Government to boost local economy

The Heart of the South West (HotSW) LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) has warmly welcomed the Government confirmation of a ‘Hinkley Programme for 2014/15’.

HotSW recently agreed the package of support with Whitehall, which is designed to stimulate economic growth in the area by preparing for the opportunities that will arise from the construction of the Hinkley power station.

The Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) anticipates the programme will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to boost the jobs and economic prosperity and generate thousands of training opportunities for local people.

The LEP has been working with its partners over many months to make sure the construction of the nuclear power station delivers the maximum possible benefit to people and businesses across the Heart of the South West.

Growth Deal Update

Alongside the submission of the Strategic Economic Plan, the LEP - together with partner organisations - developed proposals for the Growth Deal 2015/16 with Government.

Through the Growth Deal we can seek freedoms, flexibilities and influence over resources from Government, and a share of the new Local Growth Fund to invest in transport, housing, enterprise and skills infrastructure.

We have been informed that Government is due to notify us of the proposed Deal for the area and the results of our proposal in late July.  We will share details of the outcome once it is known.

Business Forum

In March 2014, HotSW registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC), changing from an informal partnership to an organisation with a distinct corporate entity.

Before this time, the LEP worked with a business forum set up in Autumn 2011.  This involved a group of business leaders who provided advice to the LEP on performance.

The business forum will now run independently from the LEP, although HotSW will still call on the forum in accordance with an agreement that has been formalised between the two organisations. In addition, members of the forum will be invited to attend HotSW’s Annual General Meeting each year, for the chance to grow and shape the economy of the Heart of The South West area.

The input and support the forum gave was invaluable during the creation of the partnership.  We continue to recognise the importance of business to the LEP and work with the forum and its members.

To find out more about the new independent business forum please email Chris Marrow.

New Skills Newsletter

A new Skills Newsletter will soon be launched, designed to update partners and employers on what HotSW is working on in relation to Employment, Skills and Social Inclusion – it’s ‘People’ theme of activities.

The monthly newsletter will cover funding, projects and developments across Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay.

The newsletter has been put together by the LEP's People Group, which has been tasked with monitoring the progress of employment, skills and social inclusion related activities in the Strategic Economic Plan and EU Structural Investment Framework.
