Welcome to the Heart of the South West (HotSW) Skills Newsletter.

This short edition looks at a new programme for young people in Torbay called tSpace, which is proving popular.

It also gives information on two events: an interactive event planned for early 2015, which looks at Big Data and the role of the Heart of the South West; and an ESF in Action conference.

Please contact us if you'd like anything to be included in future editions of the newsletter.

Unlocking Big Data - Event

The term 'Big Data' refers to the massive volume of data generated on the internet that can be mined and turned into useful information. As recently as 2012 it was estimated that 2.5 exabytes of data is created every day.

Because of its sheer volume and its nature - the data is both structured and unstructured - it is difficult to process using traditional database and software techniques.

The emerging Big Data industry that provides software solutions to process and analyse this wealth of information is expanding rapidly, and there is huge potential to grow the sector in the Heart of the South West area.

A fully interactive event is being planned to shape the conversation, examine the skills we need to invest in and define the focus for funding proposals to the European Structural and Investment Fund Strategy (ESIF).

The event - to be held in the Met Office in early 2015 - will include opportunities to meet the Heart of the South West’s Big Data community in one of the World’s leading Big Data organisations.

The date will be confirmed in due course, but to register your interest in advance, please click here.

Torbay Skills Platform Launched

Torbay Development Agency, in partnership with Jobcentre Plus,  has created an online information hub named tSpace (Torbay Skills Platform for Advice on Careers and Employment), designed for young people in Torbay.

The main purpose and overarching aim of tSpace is to support young people who are currently unemployed, those looking for work, those in work, and those wanting to progress in work.

tSpace is an interactive eye-catching website which gives young people the opportunity to explore their career options, improve their skills and gain employment direction and advice.

Since its inception, tSpace has generated over 1500 unique page views resulting in over 80 pledged apprenticeship starts through the accompanying Together 4 Torbay pledge campaign.

tSpace will continue to develop and interact with local schools and businesses to continue the programme's success.

For more information and to explore the tSpace visit www.torbayspace.co.uk or follow us on twitter @torbaySpace
